Whilst on a ride out on Saturday with other riders, I almost witnessed a similar fate. That too was at a queue for a level crossing....Whilst parked in a queue of standing traffic at a level crossing the bafoon in the transit van in front of me decides that he doesn't want to wait in the queue and starts to reverse...
But I don't think the rider had a pillion so perhaps wasn't you
From my position, further out towards the white line, I could see the van driver had left a considerable amount of space in ahead of him - clearly expecting the remainder of my group to join the others ahead.
So I shrugged my shoulders at the others & rode around the other riders and the van. Why wait in a queue if you don't have to?

Don't follow the driver/rider in front of you. Think and plan ahead. Assume everyone is wearing a blindfold. Expect the unexpected.
All easy to say, difficult to do, especially if you're distracted
