Seen the threads on bust 1200 FD's- had some advice that some bearings are replaceable and some are not. Have had advice from Sherlocks that they can rebuild, but that is restricted to the main ball bearing and the needle roller bearing.

Am intending posting to them in the morning, but having taken off my FD this evening it turns out that all the noise is coming from the pinion bearing- there is very clear discernable play in the bearing, plus it is noisy.

Now I know the pinion bearing is knackered, can nobody repair this bit of it, or am I now stuck with either 2nd hand or new?

Need an answer quick as don't want to waste the postage if Sherlocks decide they cannot repair.

Help!!

Can it not be repaired:nenau

I know it's a different design, but the 1150/1100 pinions can be repaired or adjusted, before they fail.....................surely the 1200 can also

If it can't, that seems plain daft

I was talking to a BMW mechanic and he said the 12 FD's were repairable (with the right special BMW tools) BUT the problem was that time-wise it was not cost effective at dealer labour rates, so in most cases a new one is fitted

would try... I mean what do you have to lose? You either fix it or chuck it.. Worst case scenario is £1000.... If you do the work yourself, then even cheaper....

I'm not happy with what I've been told today either ... when my GS goes in next week the FD will be overhauled and the crown wheel bearing will be replaced... and with only 2200 mls on the clock.

This decision i will fight tooth & nail as there is no way i want it stripped ... complete unit replacement i shall be pushing for.

It's a bit of a shock, I suppose, to hear that your FD needs to be overhauled so soon, but isn't that far better than finding that it's knackered and you are a long way from home?
And why are you so insistent on a complete replacement?
