Quick question re fuel sender.....

Just servicing a bike that’s new to me and tackling the joys of fuel filter change (note the date showing it’s never been changed since new!).

Re the fuel gauge sender. Should it be exposed like this or is there some sort of cover missing?

Perfectly normal..

And i've lost count of the number of bikes with full main dealer service history including very expensive fuel filter changes billed on the invoices and which still had original filters in place..

The bikes only done 14000 miles since new but has been serviced outside the dealer network several times over the years. Guess none of those places either knew to or wanted to do it. I know it’s not reached the required mileage yet to be changed but I’d have thought somebody would have done it at some point in view of the bike being 16 years old!

Mine almost hit 90k with the original filter, and it was still working just fine. I only changed it because I was in there anyway. I bet there's loads about with much higher miles on the original too.

wouldnt hurt to give the contacts on the sender a spray of contact cleaner while it’s off. that’s why i had to go in to mine as the gauge was reading wrong. easy preventative maintenance.

Just done mine only two weeks ago, similar date code. Make sure you get the flow direction right.

Thanks to everybody that replied. Job done now and thankfully the petrol vapour cloud has now lifted in the garage!

A mate despatched on an R1100RT and did huge mileages, he got fed up changing the fuel filter so just did away with it.

He never had any problems running without it and he did a further 100K miles without a filter.
