Helloo

Is it possible to convert a “normal” R100GS gearbox to kick-start?

It can be done but really isn't worth the expense. It's much easier and cheaper to track down a second hand kick start gearbox. If you ever try to kickstart one you will wonder why you ever bothered :comfort

How can I identify the several gearboxes

Hello

BTW:

Gearbox ratios are:

R100

4.4 / 2.86 / 2.07 / 1.67 / 1.50 : 1 (Optional sport version: 3.38 / 2.43 / 1.93 / 1.67 / 1.50

R100GS and R80GS

4.4 / 2.86 / 2.07 / 1.67 / 1.50 : 1

How can I identify the several gearboxes? By any serial number?

then when yerve got another box you will not start it unless you have a different black box do dah that fits under the tank which I am told regulates the spark at kick start speeds
I took me old kickstart box off cos it went tits up and replaced it with a second hand one off fleabay that is still running well and I dont miss the kickstart at all
I will put that box back if this box gives up

I thing I get your point….
:)

Old land rovers also have a hand crank… but I’m still to find someone that already managed to start a 23:1 diesel with it!

If you get an empty battery while off roading is there any trick to start the beast?
:rob

General rule is never ride alone offroad and have a pair of small jumper cables somewhere stored on the bike if you doubt the battery for some reason.

I tried to bump start the R100T the other day. Was impossible with two young blokes pushing for all their worth :D

Dont go offroading with the lights on either
The generater doesnt work till you get some revs up
Trail riding shouldnt be done at a thrash !! :rob

I've tried it loads of times on my g/s - till I'm sweating like a fat lass - but i've still never managed to get it started. I've had triumphs, husabergs and a husky 570R which can all be bitches to start and I have always managed before.

I'll give it another got tomorrow .. oh no I can't I've nicked all the bits of it :augie

Interesting what he's doing with the ignition switch in between kick attempts - is that part of the "process" that i've been missing?

:rolllaugh

Finding TDC with the ignition off, I'd imagine.
Not sure what it's like with BM's but I've had bikes that would try to break your ankle if you tried that with the ignition on :D

Kick Start Gearboxes

The best thing about a kick start gearbox is the lever makes an excellent handle to assist putting it on the main stand!

cheers,
