R100 GS project help please

Hi,

I have inhertited a collection of bits the sum of is an old 1980 R100T, stripped down 14 years ago and left in an only slightly weather proof shed..

The bike is all there and I am looking to build a HPN/Moorspeed replica.. (AND use it for trail riding in the UK/EU/GS meetings etc...)

Sadly neither HPN or Moorspeed have bothered to reply to my emails even though I want to spend money with them :blast

I have been "looking" at this project for some time.

This is my goal....

The frame, engine and swing arm together with 46mm or KTM front forks and a suitable GS1000 or HPN fuel tank, rear GS solo seat and rear frame.

But it is the rear swing arm as shown in this photo above I am interesting in replicating, buying, comissioning.

HPN have failed to reply when I asked if it is one of theirs... and I can't find any details of the bike shown or where it is..

Does anyone here know anything about the bike above and or where it was built please ?:kissy2

I have been to both the Moorspeed and HPN web sites and I have downloaded their price lists and parts details.

I have already got a suitable rear spoke wheel ready for refurbishment and Talon eng of Yeovil will fit new spokes rime etc.. but the sticking point is the rear swing arm/shaft extension.


Please forgive the basic asumption of knowlage below. When I say "I know how.." what I actually mean is that I've found,confirmed and collected enough relevant info for my local engineering company to make a reasonable job of it... ;)

I know "HOW" to extend an existing duel shock swing arm/shaft and make room for the wider 140/18 proposed tyres.

I know how to extend the shaft drive.

I know how to turn the rear brake arm so it sits vertically above the wheel.

I know where and how to strengthen the frame and the correct mounting positions for the new rear shocks.

I know how to fit a new set of front shocks, clamps and bracing.


But the bike above seems to have a bespoke stronger rear end that "looks" very nice, neat and professional.. and this would be a prefered choice...

Any help will be greatly appreciated... please be gentle..:thumb2

that has to be one of the nicest bikes ive ever seen ,in the gs world .
more skill than i have ,or will probably ever have ,if i have to be honest.
still ,when i get an aircooled gs ,later on this year ,may look to that as inspiration.

the big 45l tanks and twin shocks cant be beat :drool

id just paint the frame white or get it nickel plated :blast

HPN and lack of reply.

Hi. I went down the HPN route two years ago and even went to Siebersdorf to meet with HPN to plan my bike. Never heard back from them in spite of several phone calls. There is another tosser on this site who had the same experience. Their favorite way of communication is by fax.:beerjug:

I should have started off on this forum by the look of it :blast

Great news re the bike in the picture...

I like the look of the swingarm/shaft.. it looks very neat and I like the round, slightly larger support arm..

I'll contact the owner and hopefully he/she will be willing to point me in the right direction...

I'll post photos as I go along.. but being realistic and having to work overtime to raise the funds for the bike I dont expect much progress will happen quickly.

I've set a target of two years to complete the bike to a high standard and I'll list the spend and contact details of where, who and how any parts are found or work is done..:thumb

I'll start by clearing out my own garage to make room to lay the parts out, sell off the bits I wont be using and strip down and clean/prep the bits...

Then frame and swing arm blast, strengthen and build up...

Engine strip, clean and re build (standard until I get used to it)..

Swingarm/shaft rebuild ~ lengthen...

Front fork (06KTM) and clamps set up..

Assembly and fiddle time... and a video of first engine start up...

Exhaust build will prob be bespoke stainless steel with suitable end can..as per the bike in the photo...

Electrics, bars, control set up...

Speedo..dont know if I'm going electronic aka Moorspeed or standard GS...

and in about April 2015..I might actually get a ride on it..:)

Meanwhile my night time reading is the GS Haynes Manual :reynolds
 
What are your own engineering skills or are you planning to outsource everything?
 
Check out www.thebmwclub.org.uk go into the forum and check out the MY BIKE section and look at a post titled 'project Paris dakar rallye bike' by Bubblehead, Brad went down the HPN route but had to cancel them doing the mods because of a 2 year or so waiting list. he got all the frame mods done (to a very high standard) by a company in Newcastle.
The bike turned out very well engineered and looked very good in the flesh apart from the rear mudguard used

I've been away and spent down time thinking about the build..even knocking up a basic 2d AutoCad sketch of the swing arm with options of a curved out width way support arm..



Just got back and the first thing I did today was try out the twin shock spoked wheel in the existing frame..













It's a tight squeeze with the 140 section tyre on so putting a curve in the support arm might well be the way to go to make taking off the rear wheel easy without having to unbolt the drive housing :thumb

I'd like to use a 140/80/18 rear tyre and sadly when I got the swing arm into the frame the tyre is about 1cm too wide :(

Everything lines up perfectly.. the centre of the rear tyre is bang in the middle within 2mm... the tyre is just a little too wide.. plenty of room in front of the tyre..

If it was that easy then everyone would be riding one I suppose :friday


It's my intention to dry fit everything and test ride the bike before I grit blast the frame/engine and paint etc...

It might be that I cant have a 140/80/18 rear tyre and I dont really want to off set the rear wheel rim just to make it fit.. So I might be selling off the swing arm and wheel to fit a new HPN paralever rear end instead...

Time will tell...

Does anyone know if I can take a litle bit more out of the width of the shaft tube to give that extra 1cm clearence?
 
jeh touretech du a spacer together with the longer bolts its not expensive 50 euro I think your ok yousing it in the uk that will give you 5mm or 10mm
ofset I cant rember a freind of mine had his rim and hub offset but the spacer is the cheeper way !!!

I just lobed 3mm off my nobels on the one side with a stanley knive thats the cheepest way round it

I hpn are nice guys but if you wont your frame strenthning it will be a long waite etleast 18 monthes
