The Speedo on my 1980 R100RT has a few problems:-

It over reads by about 15%

The needle wobbles all over the place

Most irritating thing is that when it comes to zero the trip (refuel), the numbers have to go around many many times, 'till they've all 'caught up' and show zero.

While I realise that none of this is hugely serious, does anyone know if it's possible to get the speedo rebuilt..?

Or is it only worthwhile replacing 'em..?

Any info. would be great ~ :thumb2

There's a chap in the US that will do this; he is also a BMW rider and is on ADVrider. Not holding him to it, but when we corresponded he stated "if it just needs cleaning and lubrication I charge $65. If it needs major work like replacing the needle shaft, and other parts, it could be as much as $150."

Let me know if you need his contact.

In my view, try to score a pre-loved one on eBay.

Cheers

This may be a cost effective alternative depending on what you want to achieve. I have one on my DR650 and it's a good thing.

I've got the Lynx on mine which is almost identical to the Vector. It's accurate and works really well but it does bother me that I've got a non-functioning speedo sat there doing nothing. I need to make better use of the dash space.

Keep us posted. :thumb2

though i gave up on mine years ago.
it counts the kilometeres / but not the speed. so i know when a service is due, but the needles stuck! (i should post a pic) mine is doing about 70Kmh while parked. :D

i use a bicycle speedo or an old sat nav if i really want to know my speed. ;)

Mine is knackered too. The needle is bent and points below 0. The trip meter worked until last month and is now kaput.

I tried all the usual sources but new ones are not available, in either MPH or KMH. (R80g/s)

Let us know how you get on.

Here's a link

If I can get a speedo to substitute for mine I'll send the original one away, to see how good 'Speedy Cables' are...

Anyone got a speedo to lend me for a few months..?

Not wishing to teach my "granny to suck eggs" as they say, have you thought of just using a sat nav as a speedo in the short term untill the speedo comes back from repair?

That's what I use anyway (a Garmin 2820) as I can't trust the accuracy of the speedo :D

I just didn't realise it was OK (legally) to not have an original speedo on a bike...

Does the sat nav 'count' as a speedo 'in the eyes of the law'..?

Not sure exactly but not having one working properly does !!! However

Regulation 35 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 creates the requirement for motor vehicles

35(1) Every motor vehicle shall be fitted with a speedometer which, if the vehicle is first used on or after 1st April 1984, shall be capable of indicating speed in both miles per hour and kilometres per hour, either simultaneously or, by the operation of a switch, separately, unless exempted by paragraphs (2) and (3) of this regulation.

doesnt seem to indicate that it has to be the OEM item or that it has to be permantly fitted, Plenty of custom vehicles using speedos intended for bicycles which are removable, manage to get MOTs and dont get ticketed. I would guess that so long as it actualy displays the speed of the vehicle it counts as a speedo.
I am sure some traffic type with greater knowledge will be along shortly to advise further.

Having said that, you could alwasys fit a bolt on replacement type with the magnetec pickup and use it on a temporary basis if you needed to.

We need an answer :D

I can't see how a sat nav (which isn't a permanent fixture) can be a legal speedo...

As there would be no real record of mileage... or isn't that necessary..?

Now I'm baffled :blast

far as I can tell there is no legal requirement for recored of mileage, only that if recoreded its illegal to clock it, but nothing under con and use says you have to have one, cant find anything that says the speedo has to be permant fixture only that you have to have a method of showing the speed of the vehicle, and it has to work and be properly maintained.
Dosent even say how accurate it needs to be but con an use normaly allows a 10% variation.
