R100 TIC

Got the opportunity to buy a 1983 R100 that I looked at a couple of years ago but didn't buy
From what I can work out it is an R100 TIC which I understand to be a run of police force destined bikes with low comp pistons, rear drum and lower gearing. This one is fitted with an RS fairing.

Does anyone have any more info on TICs? Any reason not to buy one? I'm Googling as fast as my fat fingers can type

Except for the fact they usually have Spoked wheels meaning you have to run tubed tyres Not really

You'll be surprised, it may have low comp pistons but loads and loads of torque and that streamlined fairing Yup I'd have one no probs

Most in this country were 800cc I'm guessing from your description of the gearing that it may have started life as an 800. The tic also came with the rt fairing.

Check the frame support brackets near the rear exhaust mount and the lower crossmember. Most tics had a hard life and tend to crack the support bracket. Don't let it put you off but welding is a pain in the arse to do as the brackets difficult to get at and inevitably covered in grease and muck.

The Ten tank and the fact that I have a spare g/s single seat makes me want to do a semi off roader thing with it. Or put it back into RS guise. Or.....................

I think the RS look is the way to go. Those 'out of place cans' make it the best sounding airhead I have come across The other mufflers are Staintunes, nice gear.

The PO did some research and thinks this bike was probably a Tasmanian police bike in the past although he got it from a bloke in Lightning Ridge. Pretty big contrast in environment between Tassie and the Ridge

Should add that the plan is to enhance the, already good, off road abilities of the R100 and end up with a competent all roads tourer (mainly by reducing weight). This is a budget makeover with no structural mods and can be reverted back to standard with little effort.

im all for something different are you keeping the tenere tank. hows the front guard being held midway in the forks ? nice clean bike

Made a bracket to support the front guard (actually made several before I was happy). I think I will stick with the Tenere tank (mainly for capacity and it gives the bike a different look from other specials) and have just bought a used XT600 seat and a red cover so will see how that looks fitted up. I have made a 3mm aluminium sump guard and now have to work out the mounting. I have a box of bends available to fabricate an exhaust that is upswept from behind the footpegs and am exploring slimline muffler options, maybe a 2 into 1 setup. Instruments have been ditched and replaced by a Trailtech Vapour. Fortunately the PO was an engineer so everything is in very good, clean condition and items like the shockers have been reconditioned. With the warmer weather coming on progress might improve.

Relax Rob, TIC is back to standard set up now and may get sold off. It dawned on me that I was building an off roader when there was already a 100GS, 100GSPD, 80g/s, 80g/sPD in the shed - time and $$ was better put into the them. Because I had a Tenere tank I bought a Tenere that turned up locally - made sense to me

That guard is now on my 100GS with a insertion rubber extension to keep shit off the battery etc.
