That should read R1100GS...!

For the last couple of days here in 60N I have had the 11GS out of the garage for the 1st time since December... That was when I bought my latest "main" bike, aHonda Crosstourer DCT... The CT is a top build and a very good bike, a very, very good bike in fast forward and the DCT is a great idea that works... But.... you don't actually seem to form any togetherness with any of these bikes and for all its little faults and foibles and even though it's 20 year+ technology, you do with these old bus GS's... Also the CT has just shat it's fork seals at 10k which even for a shitted up winter bike is unforgivable and is why the GS came out again...:nenau

I've had 4 11GS's... one bad, one pretty good, one very good and one excellent, which is this one... Its scruffy, rattles a bit and has pretty loose suspension, but that's what they're like and I like it... I always loved the way the suspension was soft and the bike moved a bit but you always know what's going on... The 5 speed makes more and more sense and I sold 1150's and found the overdrive a PIA sometimes and even though they ran better I am glad I have an 11...

The previous last bike was a 12RT which was a great mile muncher in comfort and did it all very well... But it needed more gear changes, and the handling was woolly... It had no identity... I've tried to get away from GS's, I really have but I can't... They were always so different to the rest and they still are... Since the start of the 1150's BMW have slowly watered down the concept and TBH, I've never wanted a 12GS... Never ever... Especially now every xxxxer has one...:augie

So that's it... the GS will stay... I nearly sold it over Christmas off the back of an old ad on here to a bloke in Glasgow who just didn't "get" it but hey, his loss is my gain and I'm really glad it's still here... I will sort the front brakes with braided and pads, probably paint the scruffy silver black, and have a light tinker...

I might just go back to the GS alone and be a knowing Luddite... It just goes to show...;)

I'm on my first 11GS. I've had an air cooled 1000GS but that, unfortunately was a tad short in the leg for my lanky body. Allso many newer 'ADV' bikes, the best being the Triumph Tiger 955i (cast wheel model) & a KTM950ADV. But I 100% get what your saying re. the 1100.
I've only ridden mine about 100 miles so far, but I'm off to the south of France in four weeks, 2000 miles plus of riding.
I will have plenty of time to assess the merits of R1100GS ownership then :thumb

Yep..me too Ive only had 4 big bikes in my life ..1st was an xs650 which I had for yrs and over 150,000 miles then a gpx750 which is still @ the back of my lock up current bike is a 93 fj 1200 modified ;) and the gs 1100 which I got in december 2015 and my 1st bmw ...so most of them have been air cooled and pretty basic which I prefer ,less to go wrong ..still jelling with the gs1100 tho so far Im getting to know its quirks ..be good when the better weather comes and I can put some miles on it .. :thumb2

Sold my first 1100 with over 120k on it because a low mileage one came up locally. I now keep it mainly for pillion use and back-up to my daily shitter which is a Transalp 600. The tranny is incredibly able and excellent value, but when I get on the 1100 it is like mounting an old friend ( that didn't quite come out right, did it :D)
