R100GS PD - I want another.....

Jon
You say you've got ten days off to travel south and to find a bike. I suggest that you are in too much of a hurry and think that will result in either you paying too much or finding the bike of your choice is not as good as you thought it to be. I would hang on until you find two or three likely candidates then come down and have a look at them.
Alternatively buy an average one and improve on it.

I offered Jon a clean bike at a fair price, he could of got it delivered and all for over £2000 less then Gary will sell him probably a lesser bike for. He had a picture of the bike and also a magizine article to check the bike over. I have decided to keep the bike now so that's no longer an option
With respect to Jon; find a M/C, talk to vendor, get vendor to send you copy of bike's history and some high res pictures, if you are happy, go and buy motorcycle. It's easy once you get the hang of it :D

My trouble is, I suspect two-fold. Firstly, I work for eight months pretty much solid (right up at the top of Scotland), and only 10 days off and then three months solid. Secondly in the past I have always bought new or almost new bikes. So buying a 20 year old, for me is a leap of faith.
My first decision is what to buy - I have had GSs since 1990 and a few KTMs as well, oh and a few K bikes.....but mainly GSs. The last one was a new 1200GSA whilst living in the US for five years - Before I moved to the US it seemed that you didn't see many GSs over here and over there you tend to mainly see Harleys. Well, when I came back to the UK three years ago the bloody things are everywhere!! Especially where I live, pretty much every bike that passes is a GS and I'm sorry but one of the things that appealed about the GS was that it was a bit quirky.....and not on every corner.
So, what to buy......I thought that I would go back in time to one of my first ones that I loved and get a 2 valve boxer - I can't bring myself to call them airheads - far too modern a term! Maybe I'm just getting old and no longer feel the need to have the latest and hark back to 'the good old days'?!
So, I've got ten days to get South, see friends and family and have a look at a few bikes. I can't bring myself to buy without seeing and meeting the owner. Truth is, even if I do find one this next week not sure how to get it back North - I'll either have to try and find a trailer or get it shipped or something. Going to see one tomorrow in Durham and them another one that is on ebay down in Herfordshire.

Truly thanks for the offer, but I was never really keen on the black ones. Plus, I just can't bring myself to buy one without seeing it first and Devon is just too far for this trip.

Ten days started south in Inverness, then Edinburgh, now Newcastle, next Peterborough, Cambridge, Bishops Stortford, Cheltenham, Chester, Kendal then finishing at Inverness (I've moved south for my next contract).

So, just looking at two bikes, I have been waiting three years to be in a position to get a bike again - I'll just have to be patient!

Thanks for all the input chaps!:thumb2

P.S. there are other GSs that I would consider - my main priority is original and tip top condition. Others include a 'standard' 100GS, 1100GS (red), 1150GS (mandarin or one of the late white adventure SEs)

It's got all the gear and the best colour scheme and looks like a good honest bike. The collector box looks to be sound and there's a spare one. The only thing I'd change is to junk the exhaust gas recirc system.

You confused me when you said the one in Hereford. It's in Hertfordshire. I like that one too - going to see it on Tuesday. I don't like the pas system either, to remove it I suppose I need a new bottom section for the air box and something to blank off the barrels. The only stumbling point I have with the bike is the mileage, I know folks say that the drive shaft plays up with that sort of mileage. I've had to have two gearboxes rebuilt in the past due to bearings failing. But yes, you are right that it looks very honest!

Well, I missed the one in Hertfordshire - bugger! I did see the ex Gary Burton BAMW one and it's very nice but I can't pay the asking price. I have asked if he would consider a 'lower' price. I'll have to be patient

Thanks for taking the time - the first one is too much for me and the other is not nice enough.

Really that's very sweet of you but I would rather see any bike before buying. The colour scheme however is just horrible! The other horrible colour in the black and pinone that they did late in production.
