Hi Guys,

I have just recently purchased a 1991 R100GS with 66500 miles on the clock.

What are the service intervals around this mark, and what kinda of work needs doing for the upcoming services? - I'm looking to do them myself rather than entrusting my baby to some ham-fisted BMW techy :augie

Cheers,

Rob

Hi

The BMW manual for my 1989 R100GS gives the following for a full service: Checking rocker arm play, adjusting as necessary; adjusting valve clearance; renewing spark plugs, renew air filter; cleaning carb float chamber; cleaning fuel cocks; checking clutch play, adjusting if necessary; setting firing point; synchronising carbs; renewing oil filter; replacing engine oil; replacing transmission oil; replacing rear drive oil; replacing fork oil; checking brake pads and disk for wear; checking brake caliper for proper operation/leaks; checking brake fluid level; checking brake system for leaks; checking rear brake shoe for wear; checking travel of rear brake lever; checking wheel bearings; checking handlebar bearing; adjusting swing arm bearing play, greasing side stand and 2 nipples for clutch cable; checking electrolyte level in battery; cleaning battery terminals; checking nuts and bolts for tight fit; checking rear wheel bolts for tight fit; final inspection and road test. :)

Thanks :P

Can a standard kickstart just be fitted to an R100GS - as it's not fitted with one from the factory...

You would need an end cover and a whole load of parts making it far to expensive to be viable. Easier to try and buy a 2nd hand one. The only use I've found for a kickstart is turning the engine over to adjust the valves without taking the front cover off.

Something like, maybe:

Having watched Syco sweating buckets while trying in vain to kick his (lovely) PD G/S into life at the Shroppy do, it wouldn't be top of my list of add-ons :D

Proff has 2 kickstart gearboxes but obviously he won't part with them.

Does the gearbox from a Mono also fit a paralever or are they different?

The 3rd gear on my PD Classic is not perfect and Proff has kindly offered to lend me a gearbox whilsst mine is repaired.

I think so, apart from the vent that the mono uses into the drive shaft needs to be plugged, otherwise the para drive shaft gets an unwanted lube.
