Problem with my GSPD - starts fine on full choke but dies as soon as choke eased off. Most I can ease off is half choke when she misfires badly until about 3000 revs then dies if I ease off any more.

Any ideas?

i had a similar (but not identical) issue, i had to strip the carbs back to component parts and reassemble with new seals etc to fix it, nothing appeared to be obviously wrong and it took me a couple of attempts to get them clean, the area around the main jet and the small holes in the venturi just beside the 'butterfly' appeared to be my problem, mine did run sort of OK once warm though.

My first thought was shit in carb but would still expect it to run roughly on one cylinder...wouldn't have thought there to be shit in both??

Will try to take it for a run with choke on and see if it will clear.

If not will strip carbs as Shep suggests.

Might be worth draining the fuel through the taps to see if you get good fuel flow through the taps, has the bike been stood a while? Unleaded fuel has a short shelf life.

Good strong spark?

Lots of things can be at fault, just need to eliminate some, so perhaps fresh fuel if needed and new sparkplugs to start. Check you get good fuel flow through to the carbs. etc etc

I would put strong money on it being "gunge" in the holes below the butterfly.
Common fault, caused by emulsion/shit from the stupid breather pipes from the airbox.
Solution, remove and put a small filter just where the "T" piece goes into the two white pies !!!
Throw the 2 pipes away..
Simples..

I use a small HD type filter...theres a pic on a post by Rob Farmer somewhere on here.

I took my fuel taps off the tank, there is a filter on the end, mine were full of crap, I was quite surprised any fuel came through at all.

Just my 2p's worth.

Dont forget there is a small jet in the bowl bottom ( look down one of the holes) they get blocked up toooooooooooooooo :thumb2

Remove float bowls, tip out in case water in, run some fuel through, refit and test. You need a good gasket seal to get the choke jet to work proper (vacuum). Bin

Cheers guys - took her out for a spin, she's been sitting for 6 months.

Seemed to improve a bit - can take her off choke now but only running on one cylinder on idle. Runs better off idle but still roughly and lots of popping on overrun with throttle closed. Died once but started again on half choke.

Will do the things suggested (except shit in the carb lol) and get a carb overhaul kit. It's done 66k so probably well overdue.

I failed to spot a tear in one of the diaphragms of my Bings once, easily done as a small tear can easily lurk unsuspected in one of the folds. By now I can't remember the symptoms it produced, but it is something you can check without too much difficulty. Might be worth a quick check? :)

if you fired her up on old fuel there's a good chance the plugs are knacked, fresh fuel & new plugs will probably be needed.

something in the fuel goes bad and fouls the plugs giving an intermitant poor performance.

This gunge can also make its way down as far as the needle jet and down into the atomiser and clog that up a treat. As long as this doesn't harden and remains sort of semi-fluid then it doesn't seem to cause too much bother, only becoming troublesome if the bike is laid up for a few months.

I did read Proff's comments re doing away with the white pipes a couple of years ago, it makes sense, but what's this HD filter you mention, Proff?

You'll be needing this thread as well..

I'd agree fresh fuel would be the first thing to try. If its been standing, it's the most likely thing to have degraded in 6 months. There may be other things exacerbating things, but you might find fresh fuel is all you need for now
