Hi guys, loading up my R100GSPD for a trip to Asia/middle east in 2 weeks and need to setup the supension preload for the 45kg luggage l,ve on the back, the bike is fitted with a ohlins shock (correct spring for rider and luggage weight) and HPN fork incerts but what free/ride sag should l be aiming for?

dont you usually set the static sag the same ? nomatter what the load around 2inches

Nope. Thats why you see so many bikes dragging their arses when loaded.

Standard set-up for the shock is 17mm of pre-load (assuming your spring is correct already) and rebound damping on 10 clicks.

Recommended sag settings are:
Front 35/50mm
Rear 25/40mm

Rear preload should be adjusted to get your 25/40mm with you and your load on and feet on pegs.
I think the Ohlins is a bit crap for adjustment. You need to get the correct spring for your weight and load within a certain range and then use the preload adjuster to get loaded sag correct as the threaded preload adjuster requires the use of a spring compressor to be able to turn it..
I would happily swap mine for another Wilbers unit.

The front is not normally a problem with progressives in.

thats because they dont readjust it to keep the sag the same :blast
when you use it solo you set the sag to the specified amount, then when its loaded you have to readjust it to keep the static sag to that same amount simple. thanks for correcting me on the 25-40mm :thumb2 should probably reduce mine a little

Didn't read yer post properly:(....

The Ohlins is a pain for that though. You get about 9mm if adjustment on the preload adjuster. If you want more or less than that, its spring swapping time:blast

If you order the correct springs front and rear you dont need to adjust the preload, other than to fine tune the suspension front to rear.

If you have the wrong spring you wont make it right by changing the preload.

Ohlins do actually know what they are doing with shocks - that is why the Wilbers is an exact copy of the Ohlins internally.

I have a Wilbers shock and matching fork springs on my VFR and it works perfectly at the factory settings, fine tuning done with the preload adjustable forks on the Veefer.

The HPN inserts come with two sets of preload spacers. The shorter ones work perfectly with the recommended Ohlins 80 whatever springs and a rider 12 to 14 stone , so the longer ones should suit the if you have ordered a heavier spring to cope with a big load of luggage.

I have set the Ohlins with 2mm less preload, 15 mm, and two clicks more damping, 8 out. And despite what it says in the instructions the damping adjuster adjusts compression and rebound.

On the forks I have rebound 8 clicks out and compression 12 clicks out from maximum , with 10 wt synthetic oil.

It works perfectly this way, butumen or dirt, one or two up and with a load of luggage too.

I have no idea what the sag is and I am never likely to find out, but the Ohlins made no difference to the ride height from the lowest stock setting at the rear, and the HPN inserts raised the front about 15mm.

So , yes, it looks a bit more arse down, but only because the stock fork springs are too soft, not because the rear is wrong.
