Has anyone done this - if so tell me how!

Don't want seperate spotlights etc - want to fill the existing shell with something better than the resident glow-worm.

Is 1990 R100GSPD....

Cheers

I've been trying to get one to work all week. First impressions are that the difference between high and low isn't really enough resulting in lots of flashing from oncoming drivers. If you turn the dip down then the high beam is too low to make any real use of.

I'm also having a problem with strobing when the revs come up on my 100PD. If I take the bulb out of the bike and leave it suspended it's fine, put it back in the bike and it strobes. Basically the bulb doesn't like being in my vibey airhead - this may be a one of of course.

HID thingy

Rob - did you use a 'kit' or buy bits - any brands/names?

Surely there must some definitive way to light up these old tanks?!?!

Do I have to go the add on spots kind of approach?

I tried this with halogens and blew the diode wotsit even tho they were only 50 watters.

Otherwise have to get a labrador and a white stick!!

Off to the pub to strategize.....:beerjug:

Had one fitted for over 18 months now, had to buy a kit, expensive then but I do have spares. It uses one of the bulbs that moves the 'capsule' backwards and forwards to change between main and dipped beam. The beam pattern is not the best but then it never was very good anyway. But you get an awful lot of light and less electrical load.

The only problem that I have had with it is than the wiring in the solenoid, in the bulb, (the thing that moves to do dipped and main) broke after about 3000 miles, then the same happened to the spare. I have taken both bulbs apart and reconnected the fine, broken wire, given it some support to cope with the vibration and its been fine ever since.

I just bought a kit and then sorted out how to mount the different bits, it took a while but did not involve any cutting of the original loom as all the parts were supplied in the kit. The kit was made in China, but I think most of them are these days. One thing is for sure, the price has dropped a lot in the last 2 years

Nick,

Have you by chance got any pics of the modification you did to the wire?

Val.

Val, if you mean the fine solenoid wire?

I prised off the back of the bulb, the bit with the solenoid in it,
took out the coil,
disconnected the flying leads that do the 'dip/main' control,
undid one turn of the fine wire,
resoldered the fine wire to the flying leads ( it does matter which way round these go, so make a note when you take it apart ),
wrapped some PVC insulating tape around the coil so that when you put it back it's a snug fit ( I think the fact that it was not a snug fit before led to the vibration breaking the wire in the first place ),
replace the back of the bulb,
test and replace in the headlamp

Nick

Sorry, no pics I'm afraid

i also have a H4-3 HID (solenoid operated light capsule) it has been on the bike for almost a year now with no trouble. les wassal Hid50.com do a h4-3 kit for bikes it has a slimline balast that fits neatly ontop of the ignition coils and every thing is plug and play so no cutting of wires and easy to return to standard set up. the HID produces a very white light and there is lots of it. it dosnot improve the beam pattern but the vast quantity of light it produces compensates. IMO it is a worthwhile conversion. a 30w hid apparently produces a similar amount of light as a 150w filament lamp but only draws around 2.5A where as the filament lamp draws around 12.5A (please correct me if i am wrong) my K100 has a 100W filament lamp in and makes less light than the 30W HID on the airhead. I've used five of these on various machines including a couple of Nortons which I'm sure will vibrate more than any BMW.
I like them and have had no problems at all.
