Hi,

I'm fitting an R100RS fairing to my '78 R80/7. With the straight RS handlebars, it seems the top fork nuts are a bit too high to allow full adjustment possibilities. The fork top nuts on my R80 are similar to the /6 type; with the domed chrome top that you use the peg spanner to fasten. Am I right assuming that the RS fork top nuts are a straight swap?

Also, it looks like my R80/7 instrument carrier bracket is lower than the one used for the RS (possibly also the RT?). Can these brackets also be exchanged easily?

I could be wrong but surely it's a simple matter of removing the chrome domes with the aforementioned peg spanner? After that. everything is the same down below? I always assumed that the removal of these by BMW for the /7 bikes was part of their cost savings inspired by bean counters. No need to swap the top nuts surely? If there is an issue then it can be addressed by putting spacers under the handlebar mounting blocks?

Before using the RS bars, you might want to get hold of others which allow a slightly more upright position. K75 bars were popular for this IIRC.

No idea re the clocks but I can't recall spotting any difference on my RS.

I could be wrong, but I think the diameter of the internal threads is bigger in my top nuts than the later ones, which use a smaller filler plug. This shows the size of the chrome dome threads:

This would give more clearance so I could probably position my handlebars properly, but if more parts are needed, I'd rather get those needed to fit the standard RS bars.

Yes, I've tried those, but being tallish with long limbs I'd like to lean forward and tuck in between the screen - which seems to reduce the buffeting I get when sitting with my head further back.

This shows the height of my R80 instrument carrier bracket:

- which I think is lower than the RS/RT ones? I don't think the fiche drawings on realOEM show any differences as well as pictures would, but the part numbers are not the same.

I think there are 3 different sizes of clock mounting brackets. The lowest one id for the naked bikes. Middle for the RT and the tallest for the RS (this from memory so may not be accurate)

The RS clocks sit higher so the rubber buffer sits below them.

The RT clocks sit lower in their buffer

Just googled it.

Naked bike has approx 50mm

RS has 92mm

Realoem suggests the RT and your bracket are the same - Suprised me as I'm sure I had to swap mine when I fitted the RT fairing.

If you did want to swap your internally threaded steel fork top things (to take the chrome covers) for some later ones (and matching plastic covers), I'd happily swap.

I bought the chrome tops to put mine back to standard, but without threads in the the fork tops, they won't fit.

Many thanks for this info, Rob - very useful.

Since I got an RS crashpad/buffer with my RS fairing parts, it seems the 92 mm tall instrument carrier is the one I should get.

As like the next reply in this thread, I'd be happy to swap my low one for one, if anyone here has stripped an RS fairing off, and found that their instrument cluster sits a bit too high.

Oh yes, very much. Thanks a lot, markjackson.

In the morning I'll take more pictures of my fork top nuts, so you can see that the corners of my 36 mm hex nuts are OK.

Yep, the diameter of your filler plug threads is much smaller than that of the chrome top.

Hi again markjackson,

another couple of pictures of my top nuts. As can be seen, there are some marks on the sides of the hexagonal top (where a previous owner must have slipped an open ended spanner), but the corners are fine. Similarly the peg holes of the chrome tops show some wear, but if you have a new pair you'll be fine, since the new chrome tops will cover everything.

Inside my caps are some aluminium sealing washers, I put new ones in to make them seal properly. Easy to renew if you should see air leaks. I think we both have pairs of the big washers that go between the top nuts and the upper fork triple clamp. As I understand they are identical, so I suppose we both can keep ours?

Please send me your contact details to tsprivat at googlemail dot com, so I can wrap up and get the parts on their way to you.

Ta!

Perfect, ta!

I've sent you an email with my address etc. The condition of mine looks similar and equally, the ally compression washers are only two weeks old. I'm sure the big washers can stay with our bikes.

It was disappointing having to leave my new chrome tops in the BMW bags, so once these are done I'm only wheels and tyres away from finished, yay!:D
