Just fitting the master cylinder is a big improvement on its own.

1981 to 84 front end will give you what you are looking for. personally I prefer the earlier front ends like yours when they're sorted. Don't expect miracles with the brembo brakes.

I've had direct comparison with Brembo brakes then ATE brakes on my R90s, both with the appalling under-tank M/C.

The brembos were no better at all than the ATE things, in fact the ATE's have at least some feel, but the M/C is definitely going to get changed to one without a wire to create drag and reduce feel.

I have done the conversion - from single disk to twin with a undertank M/C the ATE's work fine, the cable handlebar lever has more leverage than a hydraulic one, and you have leverage at the master cylinder too.
With a handlebar MC the lever is too short so unless you have someone sleeve it down to 11mm you have a lousy ratio and it takes a real strong pair of hands to get any retardation.
Making certain the Calipers pivot freely is important too - the instruction manual with my R75/7 states that to align the calipers/pads it should only be necessary to apply the bake hard, but this seems to have been superseded by some nonsense with chalk on the disks and whatever, but if the pads dont line up with pressure they will never work properly.
Honda Moly grease with 50% moly on the pins works for me, and Ferodo's latest Platinum pads are OK too.
