Hi o wise ones...i had a new/old conti 4/18/64 fitted a few months ago and haven't used the bike since other than 100 yds up the road and back and when i came to check everything pre booking it in for an mot the rear wheel nut was loose and the tyre is rubbing on the swinging arm on the drive side,i dont have a manual for correct wheel remove/refit procedure but i figure it is fairly standard stuff......any ideas what can be amiss. It is a '78 model.

.
Maximum on a R100 rs is 400x18 the new fangled low profiles or bias belted and radials all rub on swing arm..

if you'd got it in wrong, the wheel would bind on drum or disc brake....

Thanks Proff it was what i thought about wrong fitting....so my tyre is a Continental supertwin tk44rc, is this one of the wronguns, it rubs for about half a turn and is rubbing on a sort of rub ring around the sidewall of the tyre,i am tempted to shave a little off!!

Others have done just that...:)

I still use Metz 99 rear and a Metz laser on the front on me 90s's and 100cs

Hang on, if it's rubbing only some of the way round, have you checked that it is seating correctly in the wheel well?

There is a tiny marker ridge of rubber that ought to be at an even distance from the wheel rim all the way round. I know from experience that it can be a real pain to get it even on both sides of the tyre, it helps to use plenty of tyre lubricant and lots of pressure. Be careful though, too much pressure can blow you, the wheel and the tyre up.

Enjoy. :thumb

PS Dad had something wedged between his swing arm and the tyre on his R60/5 once, I can't remember what it was but it made a hell of a mess of the sidewall before he noticed it. It is still rubbing is it??

That's also a sign of seized wheel bearings. :augie

If it is good luck getting the wheel spindle out.
