After I bought my 1983 RT, for what I think was a very reasonable price, I realised that it would want attention with 96,000 miles on the clock and very little love and affection shown it over the last 30 years.

I had some reconditioned wheels fitted so that the rear brake could be converted to a drum. After this oil started leaking into the brake shoes (just like my g/s used to) and there was a terrible clacking sound in the final drive when accelerating and decelerating.

I discussed this with Mike (mikeyboy) at Overland & Classic and he said he'd look at it for me.

I couldn't have asked for a better job. Firstly, because I work away from home, the fact that Mike picks up and delivers the bike back without any fuss makes life so easy. I don't have to lose part of my weekend riding to the workshop and arranging for a lift back.

Apparently the splines were extremely worn on the FD so that bit of metal was replaced (you can probably look this up if I get too technical), also a sleeve for the brake rod has been fitted to stop the oil leak.

Mike also asked me if I'd like the bike serviced. I realised that it was indeed due a service so said yes. On emptying the gearbox oil Mike called me to say it came out a bit like grinding paste. Even I knew that wasn't good.

So the gearbox went the same way as a couple of the other bits to Mr Scriminger's for some love.

Mike also noticed that my universal joint looked a bit iffy so replaced that and got the swing arm powder coated. Whilst the back end was out, he cleaned it all and painted all the bits that were going horrible. I'd also said that if he saw anything that needed replacing to do so, so there were loads of little bits and pieces that were replaced or made such as the battery retaining thingy.

It was brought back to me, cleaned and shiny. Many bike garages miss this step out. My car always comes back from a service cleaned, so why not bikes. It seems that Mike thinks this too. It's a pleasant change and it makes a difference.

All in all, whilst not a cheap job on account of the cost of parts, it gives me great comfort knowing that I have received a top quality engineering job on my bike and I can happily ride thousands of worry free miles. Oh, and I have new heated grips too with a switch that is just perfectly placed.

Great service, great job. Thanks very much.

Mikes getting himself quite a well deserved reputation for quality work. It's great to see the East Midlands has got such a resource and that the Tufty White express lives to ride another day :thumb2

Mike's now worked on the HP2 rebuilding the FD and doing lots of jobs that I wanted doing such as fitting aux lights and heated grips and on the Airhead which I wanted to return to a simple bike a process that also required restoring several areas - I'm very pleased with both jobs, highly recommended

hi wreford, thanks for the kind comments.your r100g/s is a lovely bike ,i hope i treated it with the subtle touch it needed(it really didnt warrant going overboard, changes for change sake, etc ,etc)the same can definitely be said about the hp2.
tufty's bike much the same, rolling improvements, without spoiling the very thing that makes these bikes what they are!!
thanks chaps.
