Morning to all. I'm Dave in Bristol UK and I have a couple of boxer twins one r1100 that I am having a odd problem with so any advice would be welcome. On leaving my driveway the engine cut out so I went to restart it with a loud bang, the starter motor was smashed off the engine case only partially held on by one bolt.i bought a new starter checked the hall sensor and bang i did it again. It seems as the ignition timing is too advanced so it's kicking the engine in reverse when trying to start.
I have replaced the hall sensor with new Motorworks item. Has anyone out there had this issue and if so what is the fix. Thanks Dave

Sounds mechanical rather than electrical.

Have you turned the engine over manually from the crank shaft to check for mechanical binding.
With the plugs out, the engine should turn over freely.

Thanks for your reply, yes I can turn the engine over with some resistance due to cams and valve springs with the plugs out I would not say freely.

Hi , with new bolts but im very wary of trying to start the bike.as the starter was being forced backwards there were some bits of metal so I have replaced the flywheel

Is the starter motor sitting firmly in position, sliding onto the pin dowel, or whatever you call it , as the starter motor needs to be fitted to the pin so there is no movement when trying to start bike.

@Dave Abes it makes me think that it is Hydrolocked or a valve head fell off and is jamming the piston ?

Have you removed the valve covers and taken the plugs out and spun it over two full rotations checking that the cam timing lines up correctly and that the rocker arms valves all return to their closed positions (A very loose rocker will indicate a problem??

If you have all the co0rrect values above It should be fine

Let us know
