hi. I hope someone out there can give me some advice?

i'm re building a R1100 (half engine) from a box of bits and I've been told that there is a life expectancy on the exhaust valves of about 30k miles then they break (they are up to 30k now)?

I've looked at the valves and cleand them and they look ok? is it fairly safe to re grind them and re fit?

Cheers
Mark

Cheers for the info, I didn't want to fit them and then they fail buggering up the piston, head etc!.

I've given them a good clean and they do look ok. When I ordered the other parts the guy in Spalding said they don't sell many valves for the R1100 lump. That sort of told me they don't fail much!

On the airheads, its wear in the valve guides that causes valve heads to fail as they clatter about at high revs. The 'slop' in the valve guide is very noticeable on the airhead exhaust valves after 30,000 miles or so.

I would check your valve guides as a precaution, then sleep soundly at night !

Bob.

Cheers Bob,
I've re-ground the exhaust valves now, waiting for new head gaskit, a pair of collets (they were nissing from the box of bits!) and a mate to get hold of a spring comp tool to re-fit the springs and remove the in-let valves.. The valves feel lovely in the guides once they have popped past the rubber seals.. no slop at all. :)

Hi all.
All valves re ground and fitted, Cam assy fitted, ready to put it all back together now, hopefully tonight.

Please can someone give me the valve / rocker clearances?

Cheers.

Blimy, that was quick.. you don't happen to know the toque setting for the lock nut? ;)

Gr8 post, I'll check the end float too :) BUT no sign of the lock nut torque setting :(

Cheers for all your help.

The motor was back together now and running as sweet as sweet things run :). I could have danced when it fired into life and holds a nice steady tick over and easily revs to the Red, then instantly settles to the tick over again.

Hahahaha.. it's ran in.. ran it on tick over for about 10 mins ;) I only held it on the red for about 2 miles ;)
