This question was prompted by another thread about cat code plugs for different bikes. In that thread the subject of catalytic converters was mentioned. They said or implied that an R1100GS with a standard exhaust has a catalytic converter, regardless of whether it has a lambda sensor or not. Now I'm confused. I thought lambda sensors and catalytic converters kind of went together. My bike is a 1999 1100GS and it does not have a lambda sensor. I have taken off the standard exhaust and fitted a Remus (which has a collector box under the transmission). I have fitted one of Greek John's stage 5 chips and haven't altered anything around the cat code plug etc. as I believed the original bike did not have a catalytic converter and I believe that the current Remus exhaust doesn't either. The bike runs fine.
However I am about to fit a Remus Viper exhaust without a collector box and so I wanted to check my facts.
1. Did standard 1999 R1100GS one piece exhausts have a catalytic converter without any external sign that they do?
2. Does anyone know if Remus exhausts (with a collector box) generally include a catalytic converter? (Otherwise what's the point of the box?)
Thanks for any info or opinions
Cheers, Nick

Not sure Nick but I do know I've a r850r that has a cat and a C02 Pot but no Lambda.

Hi Nick, underneath the collector box will be a Remus part number, if it is 300 AUSF B02 then it doesn't have a Cat in the box, not sure what is in there though ?! Noise suppression ?
Cheers
Mike

Oh yes, I didn't mention that mine certainly has a CO pot. I adjusted for fastest idle per Greek John's method.

Nick - can the CO2 pot thing be adjusted without taking the back end of the bike apart? Just asked the same question in John's chip thread :)

TIA

Hi Orinoco, Yes it can. If you take the rider's seat off, under it on the right of the bike you will see a rubber thing attached to the frame tube with some wires going into it. that is the CO pot. It is adjusted from underneath the rear mudguard. You will see a small hole in the mudguard just under the rubber thing. That hole is there so you can adjust the CO pot with a flat-blade screwdriver put up through the hole into the downward facing slot on the CO pot. If I recall correctly Greek John's recommendation is to adjust the CO pot for maximum rpm at a particular engine speed (can't remember what it was, perhaps 3600 rpm?). Use the fast idle (choke) lever cable slack adjuster to increase the revs to that level then turn CO pot in either direction to get the max rpm at that throttle setting. If I recall correctly you don't need to turn it much, perhaps 1/8 of a turn either way.
Don't forget to set the choke level slack back to zero slack when you are done.
Good luck, Nick

Mike - confirmed that my Remus has your specified part number on the collector box so no cat, as I thought. FYI it is definitely noise suppression in there, with the link pipe instead the bike is considerably louder :-)
