hi all,im planning on buying a remus end can for my r1100gs and was wondering is it just a case of fitting it or is there any engine tweeking involved.maybe a silly question but any bike i have owned before has already had a can fitted so this is my 1st time fitting one.

many thanks

General concensus seems to be leave well alone. They run better standard and the noise from a Remus can get annoying on a long run, but never fitted one myself I have to add.

what he said save your money and i did fit one the noise is bloody annoying there is no advantage
get everything set up correctly throttle bodies, valve clearances, rocker end float, plugs, air filter
try a k&n they make a diference IMO pay attention to the above it will pull like a train

As the BM OE collector / cat and end silencer are in one piece then if you're going the Remus route there's two options. 1st is a Remus collector box with an end can, the 2nd is a link pipe with an end can.

From what I've read, the link pipe is the option if you want the most noise, the replacement collector gives a bit more noise without being too loud, and messes up least the running of the bike.

R1150GS tweeking

I got rid of the standatd BM exhaust & "cat" & repleced them with a Remus end can & "Y" piece. Then I fitted a K&N air filter. Spoke with Mike Fishwick (the BMW guru) & he said you don't need to mess about with the engine management system. Difference was great, improved mid-range grunt but lost a bit of speed at top-end.
Would thoroughly recommend it.

I bought an 1100 fitted with Remus collector and GP exhaust with baffle removed. The noise is just annoying - anybody out there with a spare baffle?

The bike runs well but that is more down to careful static timing, valve and endfloat settings and carb balancing. It backfires occasionally but then they all do that - don't they?

Seriously - does anyone have I spare baffle for a Remus GP exhaust?

AgreedBernt 56, for the 1150....the largest gain is through removing the cat.

I know I'll soon be corrected if I am wrong:hide, but I don't think the 1100 had a cat....it was just a collector box.

EU spec'ed 1100 's had a cat....or at least mine does.

correct about the cat on 1100's

Remus

The Euro spec bikes have a Cat and lambda sensor, I removed the standard exhaust on my 97 bike when i bought it 3 years ago with 11000 miles on have now completed 42000 with no problems at all.
I service the bike myself and the spark plugs are always the correct colour so no mixture issues, the bike sounds great and the exhaust gives the bike added character. I have a Remus fitted with twin outlets, Cat removed and Lambda sensor plugged in to the replacement link pipe.

:D

I removed the euro spec exhaust from mine and fitted a nearly new UK spec.. (£25 Ebay bargain) I followed Steptoes advice and simply unplugged the wires to the lamda from the loom.. and binned the lot.

bike was transformed. miles per tank rose significantly (this was the most noticable side effect)

but still looks completely original.

Did you replace the Lambda sensor with a CO pot?

curiously my bike already had one in place.. It was originally a german import brought into the country on special order.. this during the period between the 1100 finishing and the 1150 being released.

I've never found an explanation for this... though its always fascinated me. The CO pot is exactly where it would be expected to be... and needed no adjustment until very recently.

perhaps the bike was originally destined for the UK... but was made 'euro friendly' as it came off the production line.. I really don't know.

my 1150 has a remus,,over 80mph on the motorways, it hasnt a massive difference on noise, and round the alps etc, its good letting it bark a bit outa the twistys, i like a bit of noise, people hear you coming,(but not too much)
iv done 600 plus miles a day, never got annoying, too much to see and do to worry bout a little increase in noise

In my experience the noise level depends a lot on which Remus pipe you fit as well as whether you use a link pipe or replacement collector box. (I'm talking about 1100/850s here, not 1150s of which I've no experience). My 850GS with a Remus Viper was very loud, being 'straight-through'; in the end I got fed up with the noise and sold it to a friend with an 1100GS. Curiously it wasn't so noisy on his bike - without checking I've an idea that the 850s have a higher compression, which could account for this? I currently have a Remus Revolution (the one with the removable baffle, which I have left in place) on my 1100RS. This makes a nice mellow noise when cruising, with a nice, controllable 'bark' on acceleration. In both cases I fitted the link pipe and have had no need to adjust anything - as UK spec bikes neither has ever had a cat; both have pots. Whilst the 850GS backfired a lot with the Remus Viper, the 1100RS doesn't with either the Remus Revolution or standard exhaust (nor does the GS with the standard exhaust now fitted).

Sorry I don't have a spare baffle - I've got the spare rivet that came with the exhaust - presumably for use when putting the baffle back in when you get fed up of the racket it makes without it.:D

Mine had a Remus and link pipe and K+n when I bought it, my mate had standard set up on his and after he tried mine he duly proceeded to purchase a can, link pipe and k+n. They apparently let the engine breath freer as the standard kit does strangle the engine somewhat. As far as noise I like em a bit loud, not sure the neighbours agree when I leave for work at 6am but feck em they wake me up when I'm nights:augie

Whats clear as daylight reading threads like this over the years is that what works on one bike can open a whole can of worms on another.. two identical models can react very differently to the same set-up.

I like the standard exhaust on the 1100.. I see no reason whatsoever to change it and risk that 'can of worms'.

What mileage are you getting? On the 20 litre tank I get to 200 miles before re-fuel. . . well usualyl around 186-190 to be on the safe side and I can get 19 litres in the tank. Thats with the cat by the way...
