I'm looking for advice on whether it's worth time and effort to try to remove pitting from bore of master cylinder, or is it toast and I need to shell out for a new unit? The pits look fairly deep.
Grateful for any ideas , thank you.....

That does look bad . All it’ll do is tear the seal I guess if used again

IMHO, brakes are your lifeline, don't compromise on them.

Get a new unit.

You could possibly get a good 2nd hand unit from Motorworks or a similar source, but unless they've inspected it properly, and are prepared to stand by that inspection, you're taking a chance on the unit being in a similar state, simply because a 2nd hand unit is going to be of a similar age.

Unless of course your bike has had a long trouble-free life as a boat-anchor and it's condition is not typical. ;) :D

Yep. Time to order up a new one, I made similar deliberations as you and considered honing it but in the end, as has been said, brakes are your life. Do it right, buy the new one. It’ll be worth it!
