Looking for some advice on a set of luggage for my R1100GS. Dont want to go mad money so will prob look at a set of 30 odd litre boxes and a set of racks. Need an idea of what size of boxes I can fit that will be around the width of the handlebars? Thanks in advance.

If you are not going offroad

A set of system panniers wont break the bank.
If that,s not enough a Givi topbox will fit as well

IIRC, there are three different lids available for the system panniers. I think the larger capacity type are called 'Global'.

I would recommend Heavy Duties racks.
Theyre made at Romania, but quality, finishing and material
can e compared to any other products.

Last year I sold original plastic bags and rails and these were
about most reasonable I found for 11GS. Well, Touratech has
some but pricing is something else..

I paid about 115 e for racks including postage to Finland.

They make some good looking aluboxes too.

I`ve been using Wolfman bags with them, they fit just great.

For anything normal and road orientated in use then the orig Systems take a fair bit of beating... Most of the others will make the bike wider and then harder to judge/filter etc... In general BMW integrate their panniers with the bike far better than most aftermarket suppliers...

If however you are off around the world including many "adventures" or are just after the Hard Adventurer look then Systems are not good... If you go for the spam tins then don't forget the stickers as well...

Flipfly was selling Systems and they do come up often for approx £120 to £150 which is good value once you bugger about with the other stuff...

Unless you are lardy loaded camper, BMW System panniers are great

Less unsprung weight too & they come off in 20 seconds & leave no ugly pannier rails

Inner bags are the best way to use them

Global lids increase capacity by 6 litres per side

I sold alloy panniers in favour of System panniers - brilliant pieces of kit

I've got a set of system panniers and rails in the cellar, they're a bit scuffed up but if your interested i'll dig the out - you can have them cheap if you come and get them.

Mine have been sold I'm afraid.

I rarely use my panniers other than for trips, so my Verns suit me brilliantly, two weeks away and no need to strap anything to the back of the bike (I don't even use a top box).

IMHO Verns are the best of the Ali pannier systems, I've had touratech and some homemade hobbies, but the Verns excel in every way other than removal. It's a 5 minute job and impossible if the panniers are full, but I use tesco bags for life and leave the panniers on the bike. The flip side is they don't move around and would be hard to steal quickly without the right spanners.

They make good tables for cooking on too, and a most excellent cheese board :D

+1 for the system panniers. More than a decade of pretty much daily use ranging from carrying lunch to work through overloaded touring and they're still going great. Broke a rail falling off on the dirt, cheap and easy to replace. Broke a latch crashing on black ice. Cheap and easy to replace.

They don't look all rugged and adventure. Maybe that doesn't matter if you're a sex god. Me, I don't give a shit.

Amen :)

When I bought my 850GS new in 2000 I had the system cases fitted. Eventually I decided to fit ally ones, mainly because I used to go camping. The system cases are fine really: I still use them on my 1100RS. I have a pair of pannier rails suitable for the 850/1100GS that anyone who wants them can have for nowt. They are in good condition as they weren't used for long. Might have a few other minor GS bits too - again FOC. Buyer collects.

Another benefit of the system panniers is that they are smooth, and as a result, they tend to not do much if any damage to other vehicles when filtering!
