Hey guys, Ive fitted a top box to my 1100GS. When fitting i wasn't happy with how far back it needed to be seated so not to restirct pillion space. Now ive noticed some hairline cracks starting to form in the cast ally. Im looking for some ideas/solutions to take the strain away from the rack. Cheers

Which top box?

Which rack system?

If Givi/Kappa/Shad (they’re all the same) you need the flat metal bracing plate under the plastic rack that should have come in the fitting kit, to avoid the silver oem rack cracking

Alternatively Wunderlich used to do some bracing arms, not sure how effective though

Both items will be long out of original production nowadays - so here or eBay worldwide is your only option

Its a universal box, ive had a 3d printed plate made to raise the box because ive fitted 1200 ally panniers, so just need to take the strain off the rack.

I think that’s never gonna work sadly
The original Givi/Kappa fitting systems with a steel brace and universal plastic mount were designed in the 1990’s when only lighter plastic boxes were ‘de rigeur’
Now the fashion is for heavier alloy boxes and these1990 fixing plates were never designed for these weight (nor was the silver oem alloy luggage plate)
So you’ll crack and bend it !!
The only decent rack of the era for an alloy top box is the 1150 GS Adv one, oem from BMW’s and designed for an alloy top box
It’s got six mounting bolts and is made from high density plastic
It is light but very strong

I would not put any aftermarket rack and top box on the r1100/1150 gs unless it had the Givi (or other aftermarket ) reinforcement braces underneath . The standard alloy rack is not up to the extra weight and vibration

It is the braces (part 1) that makes the difference

Thanks I think the these brackets would be perfect, i will look at getting something similar made up as i would not need the rest of the kit.

I think think mouning brackets from the GIVI system or something similar will solve the issue along with a new rack (Which i already have). Weight is not really a big issue as the box is not used to carry heavy loads, mainly just my Litelok and then helmet storage. When travelling all the weight is in the Panniers.

You need to pop over and see me. I have just the thing you are looking for all handmade in stainless steel.
