R1100GS Potentiometer Setting

Recently balanced and synch'd carbs on my 1996 1100GS and seems to be running pretty well but wanted to check my CO level as my plugs are a bit sooty. My bike has no CAT and no O2 sensor in the exhaust so I am assuming I adjust my CO % using the potentiometer under the seat? Got is checked today and it was reading just over 8% !! Before I go racing in and adjust this can anyone tell me which direction (when on your back on the floor looking up at the adjecter screw) I turn this screw to reduce to CO value to close to the 1.5% +/- 0.5% specified.

Clockwise weakens it, it is slow to respond and an endless potentiometer, so it goes right back to the top if you go too far

I measured the resistance across pins 1 and 2 earlier and it seems that the POT is 0 - 1k ohm across about 14 turns. I will take it fully clockwise (weak) ad start there. Thanks for the help.
