My new to me 97 R1100GS with 97000kms smokes a little when cold. Runs fine still pulls 190+ and doesn't use much oil. Is this just BMW character? Or is it time for rings?
Andy.
If so it does smoke - last gulp of oil from last stroke before the engine was stopped flows into exhaust because one cyl is standing above horizon level coz of the position the sidestand creates. This small gulp of oil smokes.
It smokes a bit when using center stand too, but only for a second.
So prefer the center stand on overnight stays etc, as most of more experienced GS riders do.
My 1984 K100RS was horrendous. Apparently BMW went on to fit modified Citroen piston rings to cut down on the oil seeping past with it on it's side stand. If they'd had the foresight to put the cylinder head on the right hand side of the bike there wouldn't have been the problem. But with the cylinder head placed below the sump it was always going to be a challenge.
60K miles is not a lot for one of these motors so would be surprised to see significant wear to rings/bores.Depends on how it is treated though.
Thrash it/use poor quality oil and you could see problems.
I presume the oil level is checked correctly and not overfilled.
Can you check the compession each side;see if is within spec.

Is the smoke definetly oil related (blueish) or too rich mixture (black/sooty smoke).
My late 1100, 24,000kms has been well looked after, properly serviced and ridden with a bit of mechanical sensitivity .
It's always left on the centre-stand but smokes for about 10 seconds every morning. It doesn't need a drop of oil between services, though, so I'm assuming that it's a very little bit of oil that's burning.
My 2000 R1150GS with 128,000kms does the same on start from cold. Yet it still runs fine when all warmed up.
I think its a good thing. As long as it puts out oil smoke when cold it means there is still oil in the motor and compression in the bore. Same when I look down and see oil on the filler plug when riding.
Took it for a long run yesterday to see what sort of mileage it'll do on a tank for the 1000 mile in 24 hours ride I'm doing in october and started it this morning and no smoke.... just the usual mist. Sooo either it's out of oil or it just needed a good thrash....
