R1100GS steering tube threads

Hi all when I replaced the steering head bearing on my 1100 and went to replace the bolt the threads were very tight when screwing the bolt in..no threadlock on the threads ..is there a way to clean up the threads in the frame or a suitable remedy to fix ..Ive ordered a new steering bolt , and a new bearing ..again !!! does anyone know the thread size and could I use a tap/die to recut or clean up the threads or use a longer bolt threaded in from the bottom and screwed all the way to the top to try and save the threads ... Ran a tap up from the bottom then used a thread chaser to restore the threads .also soldered the wire in the ignition switch..just to replace the bearing in the yoke and refit ...oh and the thread size is an M18 x 1.5 which is also the same size as a catalytic converter sensor...

Bike back together again..didn't realise how badly worn the steering bearing was

Made a right hash on mine, top yoke bolt was mega tight so decided remove it with a 400nm impact gun, then this was the big mistake run it back in and out several times till it was smooth, only issue i had cross threaded it.

I ended up getting a local machine shop to mill out the bottom and fit a top hat sleeve in from bottom, lesson learned.
