R1100GS - tyre options...

Hi, I have a 1995 R1100GS, currently fitted with Metzeler Tourances.
I also have a KTM 990 Adventure, currently fitted with TKC80's

On the KTM, I changed from the original Scorpions to the TKC's to give me better grip thru the snow, also to make it easier to go over some grass to where I park my bikes.
The Scorpions, and Metzeler Tourances don’t like wet grass, and quickly turn my yard in a mud pit.

The TKC's give nice grip so I don't spin the rear nearly as often when parking the KTM.
I also decided to stay with the TKC's all year, mainly to reduce the top speed to below the instant "go to jail" limit, as the KTM encourages enthusiastic riding when on an open road, and more so on the twisties.

Now I have a GS...which tyre ?

Do the knobblies on the TKC's cope with the additional weight of the GS ?

What other offroad tyre is preferred by GS riders?

TKC is the main "offroad" tyre used on the GS. They were fitted as std to the adv by dealers.

THere is also a Heikandu (or spelt something like that) which fits and is a snow tyre. Is meant to be as good as the TKC but longer life.

Yep.. Tsiklonaut has consistently raved about heidenau's His tyre of choice for his ongoing RTW two-up trip on an 1100. (as well as his choice before the trip for general use) I'm sure on his return he will have plenty to say about these tyres.

I believe he ruled out using TKCs due to poor mileage and price.

Well worth looking at in the meantime. To my mind

I have looked at heidenau tyres as well for a change. The roads here in Shetland tend to be very abrasive and I had a lot of fun on TKC's a few years ago (which can wear fairly quickly) so thought they might be a good combination. Obviously you would have to fit as a pair as they are crossply's but there are some reasonable prices about and the 1200 section has many threads (!) about them.

There are a few models so have a look at this version...
