Hmm.. well Im seriously pissed off with the Gs now .. after finding the rear shock problems Ive now found the rear wheel has side to side play  I had been reading up about the fd issues before I contemplated purchasing a gs .. (I had checked the wheel when I went to view the bike and during the test ride an stopped to check it over out of the owners sight and waffling on) .and all seemed ok.. I noticed today when giving it a clean with the boxes off the wheel had play .. so how much for a bearing an how easy is it to do ?
Cheers :)

Half hour job easy, wheel off split FD take crown sprocket out , take bearing off , put new on and assemble .
Can be done on side off the road with right tools

Before you start pulling the FD apart check the para lever bearings they are adjustable,if you look on the inside of the swinging arm there is a 30mm lock nut with 12mm hex drive just forward of the hub do a search on here it will show you how to do it.

There are also a couple of you tube vids about adjusting the para lever bolts including the very entertaining Chris Harris of affordable BMW servicing fame.

Put your foot on the back brake and then see if there is movement. If the movement stops then it is the para lever bearings.

Both jobs are simple enough to do.

If it is the final drive bearing, DO NOT, hammer it on to the crown wheel. Heat it up sufficiently and allow it to drop into place.

Well jus been out @ lock up and took wheel off.. the final drive bearing area is bone dry ...but when I grasp the whole paralever/drive there is slight play @ 6/12 o clock ..when I put the wheel back on and gave it a shake there was quite a 'wobble' Im kinda confused now :nenau

Post 5 paragraph 1..... did you try it? And the results are?
err..no .. with the wheel bolted back on there is a fair wobble when its shook !!! surely there wouldnt be that amount of play if it was the paralever bearing ? there isnt any clicking noise and the fd bearing is dry .. Ill rest me trolley jack on the brake lever tomorro and try it again ;)

Are you for real?

Go on to fuck.

It's a big job. It requires tools. It's very do able. I did mine in a car park. Just to say again you need all the bits and bobs. If you have all the bits pieces and a garage and the know how and a half an hour?!

Have a look here. In Polish but perfectly understandable from the vid.

You might need to use a lot of heat to melt the thread lock. Or a previous owner might have done the job without using it. Just ca canny and likewise when rebuilding it lest you cross thread. You'll probably want to use a torque wrench to pre load the bearing rather than the ingenious method used in the vid!

You have weird clocks in your house :D

If the play goes with the brake on then it's the FS bearing.... if it doesn't, then it's the paralever.
There can be a fair amount of play before the seal lets go and throws oil all over your back wheel.

Well had another look @ the gs today .. I rested my trolley jack on the rear brake pedal n it locked on the brake ..and the play is still there and When I looked closer I could see the diff housing move and also could feel a clunk @ the paralever joint as I rocked the wheel so fair to say its the paralever bearings .. thanks for posting up the video :thumb2..:) much better than trying to read how its done :) ... I'll have a go @ taking up the play tomorro :thumb2

Went through all this in July with my GS. As well as shagged FD bearing the paralever. Replacing the FD bearing is not so complex, but I wouldn't want to do it by the roadside, unless I really had to. I replaced the paralever bearings with the bushes sold by Motorworks. It's easy too early to tell if they're any improvement on the needle roller bearings, but a cost effective solution

If you're handy with the spanners and you have access to tools, it's all manageable.

Not sure I'd run with the half hour for the FD. Maybe beemer pimp was just back from the office Christmas party and was feeling all optimistic
