R1100gs wont start after chip install.

Hi all i know i posted this a while ago but just got round to fitting another john gemi chip that he sent out to me as i been riding the bike and enjoying the good weather. So tonight i put new chip in, all pins aligned, small notch the correct way put it back on the bike and exactly the same as before bike wont start then floods. Bike runs absolutely fine with my original chip back in. The thing is i must be the only person who this wont work for everyone else says they drop it in fires up and runs great extra power and smoothness. Paul G that yellow one in my fuse box was the starter motor so pull that and nothing happens. Any advice appreciated with this very strange one. Ill try put a couple pictures on of my ecu and fusebox for reference. Cheers all hope you been making the most of the good weather the past few weeks.

Afraid i dont know how to add pictures on here i thought id just press a button and upload from my computer, but seems to be asking me for a link to somewhere, far past my computer skills, im still using pencils most days haha

You have pulled out the wrong relay.... it should only have two pins on it.
It's not actually a relay, more of a jumper.
I pulled most of them out in the end just to try it each time, i got a relay to the left and right of my yellow one both of them relays though not 2 pin jumpers. only thing i will say is where i plug my chip in on the motronic unit its like theres another sort of chip adaptor underneath it, so the pictures online i have looked at of others they just plug directly into like a pad on the board mine has like a slightly raised pad as if its got something plugged in underneath i dare not get something to lever it up in case it is soldered on and normal. Cheers Paul for the continued help i could just run it with my normal chip as everything works fine but it keeps just bugging me not knowing why all others have no issue

Try adding the images now.

No it was a 5 pin relay and as mentioned when i un plugged it no starter motor turning over. I just read that i have to be a paid member on this site to post pictures so when im back later i will do that and then up load some, as they say a picture says a thousand words haha

Ah well done not sure how you did that but attached images popped up try this

Very odd.

@mikeyboy any idea how the plug in this location is a 5 pin. Also does that socket on the Motronic look right to you?
The chap i had it of had it 18 years and had massive amounts of paperwork over the years so it was well looked after but has had stuff done so its got the nippy norman fog lights up front assuming some additional relays may be for that also running custom made twin front headlights with daylight running lights so again may be another additional relay for that. that plate below the chip that says key 101 is the thing that has me most suspect

Took me a while to find this old photo of my coding plug that I pulled when I chipped my old 1100.
I don't have a photo of the stripped Motronic though.

Cheers paul for sending that, tomorrow ill pull each of them and see if any are 2 pin, hoping someone spots that key 101 thing and can spread some light on that too cheers all for the help with this

The previous owner did a really good number on your fuse box. That’s about as non standard as you could make it.

From the image supplied, you do not have the coding plug fitted. There isn’t any room for it.

Relay 1 is your starter relay.
Relay 2 and Relay 3 are after market relays added for your additional lights.
As for the other relays, You are missing the load shedding relay which should be a small yellow one, clearly the previous owned has replaced it with a small black one, so as all the relays have been moved, where it is in the fuse box is anyone’s guess.

I doubt your problem with the non starting after chip replacement has anything to do with the fuse box and relays. But then who knows what the previous owner did when wiring in his additional lights.

My only advise would be is to pull relays 2 & 3 and then see if the bike starts with the new chip. If it does then it would be a clear indicator that the wiring for the additional lights is drawing power from where it shouldn’t.

Thanks ian for the detailed and labeled reply, I belive I did take those two out earlier but will try again tomorrow, it makes little sence that it would be to do with the bike electrics (albeit altered ad you mentioned) as its starts runs and rides fine on the standard chip did 70 Miles today no worries. Did you clock on the picture of the circuit board that key 101 sort of adaptor that the chip sits into? I've looked at other pictures of people gemi installs and that isn't there it just goes direct onto the board wondered if you had any knowledge of that? Cheers guys good to have to odd awqard one makes it all the more forefilling when it's cracked 😀 👍

The mini circuit board (key 101) is a possible point of failure.

Personally if you haven’t already tried it; and if you have I’ve missed it reading your thread; I would fit the new chip directly to the mother board and try again.

Yeah that was where I was leaning towards I'm hoping then that it just levers out like the chip, I'll be holding my breath while doing that, only been in 30 years or so, what could go wrong I think ill try remove it tomorrow afternoon and report back results cheers all 👍

OK so I went and removed the lower Base that the chip was plugged into and this is what it looked like underneath, anyone seen anything like that before? Anyway tried gemi chip direct to circuit board and exactly the same just turns over no start and floods. So I think I'm resigned now to putting it all back together with my original set up and just enjoying riding my bike as was.
