Just got an R1100RS. At £475, I couldn't resist.

It's all there, in averagely tatty condition, 60K miles, but with a knackered gearbox. I have the box out and it seems the input splines are knackered - clutch internal splines are all gone.

I'll open the box up in a few days, when I get time, but in the meantime I wonder if anybody has:

1) A known good box for reasonable money?
2) A good input shaft (box is an M94 - don't know yet whether it's one of the later "clean bearing" versions. Number is 0005800DAF)
3) Any helpful advice on rebuild (apart from "send it to Scriminger").

Back later with more photos and info...

Without a doubt I would let Steve Scriminger of Scriminger Engineering in Sleaford sort it. He has done hundreds of these and is very reasonable on price, I speak from experience. In April he charged £575 to take the gearbox out of the bike, overhaul the box and re fit it. As your box is already out it should cost much less.
I wish I had got my RS for £475, I bought a real Turkey from a bloke who looked like Gary Glitter in Norfolk. Spent what I paid for the bike again in parts, Motorworks and e bay.de are a good source.

Karl, I know you're right, which is why I put "not Scriminger" in the OP. I'm trying to spend as little as poss and I'm competent to do the work - not as well or as quickly as Mr S, I'm sure, but I'm time-rich ATM. :)

Im onto Motorworks already, ta for the tip re German fleabay. :thumb2

Dr F, thanks for the heads-up, I have the BMW manual and I can borrow a dial gauge, surface table, whatever. This one'll take a while, but I'll do the next one (may be the same one!) in half the time. :thumby:

Well, I have the box apart and remarkably there is no significant wear or damage visible on first inspection, except maybe a little play on a couple of the bearings.

Input shaft bearings are taper roller, output shaft bearings are open ball and intermediate shaft has a plain roller at the back and an open ball at the front. I'll replace the taper bearings with sealed balls on the new input shaft and get the spacers to suit, then measure for shims - it's much easier than setting the preload on the taper bearings. The other bearings, I'll look at more closely and replace as necessary, also all seals.

Does anybody have a serviceable M94 input shaft they would care to sell me? This one: LINKY

Also, does anybody know where I can borrow (I may mean hire) the BMW gearbox measuring plate, part 23 4 600? Or has anybody improvised (save me trying to re-invent the wheel) - I'm wondering about Plastigauge :nenau

Any other wisdom tips gratefully received... :bow

I wish I had your technical abilities, would have saved me £££'s. I hope it goes well, would Motorworks have access to the tools. They may have an output shaft, or Scriminger may have a spare.

I was going to suggest engineer's blue on the helical gears to get the correct shims/alignment then thought Id better see what these boxes are like inside. Oops its not a helical :augie but I did come across this. If you've not already seen it -

Thanks for the idea, that's the kind of thing I was looking for (OK, so it misfired, but hey - it's the thought that counts, right). Yes, seen that thread and many more. So far, I'm likely to try a depth micrometer and a straight-edge or, if I can figure out where to put it, Plastigauge.

Motorworks want £102.50 posted for the shaft, which I think is a bit steep. I'll pick their brains re the measuring plate though. I'll also try Mr S, would not have thought of him for parts...

There's a VERY scruffy-looking box on Fleabay for £60, but he won't ship it. Anyone travelling north from Hinkley who may be prepared to pick it up for me in exchange for petrol & beer?

Having been caught out previously, whilst you are probably aware you can get Gems on e bay you can also get glitter coated turds. I think with the shaft unless you can get some really clear photos off of the seller, it may be best to bite the bullet pay a bit more and get one from a trusted source.

Maybe, yes. I've asked him for a close-up of the splines and the gearbox number - I need M93 or M94. If I buy it and it's OK, I may get more than my money back from selling the other shafts on ;)

You could offer to arrange the delivery if seller will package the box.
But the other shafts fail less often so how sellable are they(?) and it's still a gamble regarding the box itself and delivery packaging.

Scriminger may have a spare.

Indeed he does and at a very reasonable price - what a nice guy! Advised me re bearings and shimming, when he tells it it is straightforward, unlike all the bullshit on the interweb.

All necessary bearings and seals cost less than £70.

Thanks for the tips, chaps - I just need a clutch and a battery now and I think I'll have a good bike for cheap money!

Look out for either an RS or GS for sale in the next few weeks :)

Glad you got sorted.
Being a numpty on gearboxes, I gave Steve Scriminger my g/box and bevel box a while ago and his service and costs were exemplary. No problems whatsoever. Very helpful place to deal with.:beerjug:

Plus one on Mr Scriminger, it's a rarity to find such good service at a reasonable price. He does it for the love of the bikes and not to make a quick buck out of everybody, have a look sie on his Facebook page as a lot of the engines he builds are raced.

He's a complete gent - he charged less than half the price that Motorworks wanted for the shaft and gave me some free advice that was worth double!

Yes, we had a good chat, including how he modifies the boxes for racing!

Look on e bay.de for a genuine clutch....

Or even a kupplung! Thanks for the tip :D

Also check out Simply Bearings - a good range of bearings & seals at competitive prices and free next-day recorded delivery (despite what it said on their website). Recommended to me by Mr S, who uses them himself.

Might get a chance to put the box back together later today, all being well :thumby:

I should know better than to ask but "Did you order C3 clearance bearings??"
