hi guys bit of advice please,i have a r1100rt ,fully serviced ,but on cruising down the motorway i can feel a slight surging not much but it is there.probs worse about 85 mph ,normal riding its perfect ,to be honest i thought it was the wind with my screen in the up position and panniers on.but no its the same if i take the panniers off and lower the screen.
i have done a little reading up this and it seems to be be a common fault with this bike ,is there a fix
cheers

Put a quick order in for a set of new R1200 injectors from gog for your 1100. Maybe that will cure the problem.

i know i did consider that, but i am not entirely sure that would cure the issue, other than the slight surging it pulls like a train

A Techlusion fuel controller will eliminate surging and make the bike run as should. It worked for me when I had my R1100RT.

Did it do this before the service? Valves properly adjusted and TB balance should reduce it (rather than increase I mean).

As also mentioned above, you could get the 1200 injectors. If you're quick, you might get onto the bulk order being set up by Gog...new, balanced injectors on your bike will only do good things :-)

Assuming you've already done a good tune up, consider an AF-XIED. The fueling, as designed by BMW, is always near the edge of surging below 50-70% throttle. If you could get air, fuel, compression and ignition to be perfectly equal at all throttle positions and engine loads the engine wouldn't surge.

What the AF-XIED does is to add just a little fuel to allow your engine to consume the unburned oxygen during combustion, thereby making it much less sensitive to fuel imbalances anywhere in the cruising range. Closely matched injectors are good but adding a little fuel is even better because all factors don't have to be perfect everywhere. And you get a side benefit of moving the AFR toward Best Power Mixture, improving throttle response.

This is what i fitted to my single spark 2002 1150, cured it completely..... :thumb
Nothing else quite sorted it. Its now got 1200 injectors too, smoother than a smooth thing, for an old tractor...:D

ok guys may thanks for the imput, yes i guess i am going to have to spend some money, thanks again and all duely noted

" Fully Serviced"? by who? are they any good?

How many miles on the bike?

I have a R1100RT which is bog standard with none of the above snake oil gadgets and it does not surge at all at any speed, never has, suggesting that a well set up bog standard 1100rt engine does not surge, I have had 2 R1100rt's and neither surged, before you spend your money I would look to setting up your standard motor.

Make sure end floats and clearances are correct, plugs gapped right and in good shape timing chains do not have to much slack (Sticky chain tensioner on either side?) do a compression check make sure both cylinders the same, are throttle bodies ok no air leaks?

Is your fuel filter due for a change?

Injectors can be cleaned and balanced (Google for someone local to you)

yeh cheers mate ,i did the lot myself ,inc all valve gaps end float plugs filters ,inc fuel filter etc etc the lot,i did do a spray around the rubbers and no leaks ,milage is 18 thousand miles yes its low i only bought it last month, its not really bad i can just feel it

How much ethanol does the fuel you buy contain?

An AF-XIED isn't the way to go since it requires an O2. If injector cleaning doesn't help you could try R1200 injectors which will add fuel to bikes without O2s.

thankyou rodger, what do you think about one of johns chips

I'm more skeptical than most. When people rave about a fueling product without being able to measure the changes, I wonder.

Personally, if I owned an older 1100 without an O2 sensor and wanted to improve it I'd install a Wideband O2 at the point where the exhaust headers merge and start by boosting fuel pressure to 3.7 bar with an adjustable regulator. Then I'd tune the CO Pot to an AFR of 13.5:1 and ride, making riding logs of the AFR and then testing higher and lower pressures.

Below is the setup I used. You can read about it here: https://forums.bmwmoa.org/showthread.php?58505-Wideband-O2-Installation-Overview. You can attach the O2 to the Motronic or not, your choice.
