Bought a lovely looking R1100S 16k miles, and this is the first BMW i have owned and ridden. Over the past couple of hundred miles it has developed a couple of issues that are annoying to say the least.

The front crank seal started to leak, so pulled the cover off and replaced the seal and it continued to leak. Thinking i may have damaged the seal putting it on, i replaced again and it still leaks? I preformed the seal, used a plastic guide over the crankshaft to protect the seal going on and its square in the case. I must be doing something wrong as it keeps leaking, any suggestions ?

The ABS - i keep losing the rear brake, goes to residual brake pressure and the warning lights flash, this happens either immediately or during a ride after a random number of miles. Replaced the rear sensor, no difference but what i have noticed is that when stationary and the engine running, if i pull the front brake on as the ABS pump actuates on the front brake the speedo needle starts to register speed, jumping up to about 15/20 MPH? Again any ideas? Possible bad earth?

Last one, this one may just be me. While ridding i have noticed that the front wheel, when leaning, feels like its trying to turn in on itself (sorry crap description) seems to improve after a few miles but its an odd and slightly unnerving feeling, not sure i trust the front end sort of feeling. Could just be me, so feel free to chastise if so - but anyone else had a similar feel when new to BM?

Anyway love the bike, just getting my head round a few niggles

Year of bike .. although it sounds like it’s a post 2092 by your description of the servo brakes,
They are notoriously unreliable, and it it’s the modulator, can’t be reliably repaired. Have the fault codes read ., they usually need removing and reverting to normal non servo/abs .,

Here’s a pile of servo/abs modulators I removed earlier .. :D

I can’t help with the mechanical issue you’ve pointed out, but having recently had a very similar issue with an 1150RT ‘turning in’ my first thought would be tyres. These bikes do tend to turn in a bit anyway, which is made hugely more noticeable if the tyres are old or worn. Mine had me worried that there may be a geometry problem somewhere but it was resolved instantly with a set of new tyres. In my case Continental’s.

Thanks - its a 2001 model year. If it is indeed the modulator thats going to be annoying, so removal may be the only option. Thanks for the response

New set of tyres, good call..just checked the date and the front is coming up on 6 years old, from the invoices i dont think the past owner did more than a few hundred miles on them.

New set of tyres and see how she feels after

Thanks

2001 bike - That should be a non servo bike and have normal ABS ?
Where did you get this bike ?

Private purchase about 3 months ago from someone up in Hanley.

Not sure which ABS it is, but as you can hear pumps actuate when the brakes are applied then i can only assume its the servo assisted ABS.

On my 11S I found the front tire is particuly sensative to pressure, just a few PSI difference has a much more noticable effect than on my 1150GS.
find and use a reliable and repeatable pressure gauge and monitor.
