R1100S

Hi Tom, I bought a '04 Boxercup the end of April.
I previously had (actually I still have it... sort of...) an R1150R that I absolutely loved, but I always wanted to move to a sport touring bike (I wanted to get an S for a couple of years).

I always had silver cars, silver bikes... got bored and decided to buy the flashy boxercup version. :augie :D

It's an honest sport touring bike. The torque is at roughly 1000rpms more than on the standard GSs and Rs, the fairing does an excellent job for air protection, and lets you drive at a much faster pace than, say, an R1150R (not sure about a GS).

Yes, it's not comfortable as your previous GS. In case you plan to travel long distances you can move the bars in the "touring" higher position. Some bikes are already like that.

You'll have two big panniers that is quite a lot of luggage IMHO, I don't think a tank bag is suitable for the S since the riding position you will have (basically with the chest on top of the tank).

Optionals?
The only thing worth is buying a couple of Ohlins.
Everything else comes second, but laser exhaust and an Y will give her a nice deep sound (like a gruntling hog as a mate once said :augie :D:D:D:D ).

BTW, I had the choice to buy either a 12S or the 11S... I decided for the latter... had "stronger feelings" for it :D
I've done more than 2k miles so far and I'm loving it.

Drying the R1100S (RIP) after a wash. That pic just reminded me what a pain getting to the fuse box was. Gotta love CanBus.

My wife recently did her cbt,i mentioned on Boxertrix that i may have to sell my 1100ss (Manderin & Grey check)to finance her doing module 1&2 test and buy another bike for her.
Within a very short space of time i had a PM on the site to say, consider your bike "sold".Before i knew it my beloved 1100 was being ridden away by it's new owner.
Do i regret selling it, yes yes yes,the 1100 is a far underestimated machine by all but those who have owned and ridden them.
I have owned 3 1100s since "99" it is my opinion that they are the most viable road orientated sports bike around, the handling and power delivery are just about perfect for the diversity of roads in this country and in the right hands will get you from A to B with a lot of pleasure and not to much drama.
I also own a 55 plate 1150gsa,if i could only own 1 the 1150gs or 1100s,although i loved the 1100ss the diversity of the 1150gs would make it the one for me "just".Enjoy your 1100 they are a fine motorcycle.

Roads and weather best suited for the S (I wanna get out of the UK):

I spent £3000 on top of the purhcase price on this one ,including, battery upgrade (with new battery cage) wide back wheel, Ohlins ,sargent seat, exhaust,BMW comfort bars and various other bits and bobs.
I would go for a late ABS one with sports suspension ,heated grips, and wider back wheel,as you'll end up wanting them .

In the interest of consistency, I thought I'd post here that I've bought a 1999 GS1100. Stick with what you know.

Pic here.

just for info, a gs1100 is something suzuki made

what you have is a r1100gs, or 1100gs, or 11++gs

not a gs1100 etc etc

beginners:comfort

enjoy, looks good, and from a decent company
