Following on from this rather embarrassing thread I’m about to start troubleshooting a start up problem on my R1150GSR.

Whilst riding the bike I experienced a slight backfire followed by the engine stalling. Bike failed to restart and hasn’t started since. Engine turns over on the button and the fuel pump primes on both ignition and side stand. The hall sensor was changed for a 2nd hand unit just before winter.

Rough plan of actions as follows:

  • Inspect wiring around headstock
  • Remove spark plugs and check for spark\damage
  • Investigate coils (twinspark - both coil packs changed 18 months ago)
  • Inspect fuel lines
  • Investigate hall sensor wiring
  • Change ECU (I have a spare)

Anything I’ve missed? Any tips or ideas appreciated :thumb

Fuel filter

When was this last changed if ever? could be clogged this will have this effect
or hose has come off in the tank. Back firing now and again is what they all do.

Do you mean the fuel pump primes ok when you turn the ignition on ?

If so, does fuel pump also switch on when you press the starter button...

If it doesn't the problem is 95% with the hall sensor.

If the fuel pump works when you turn the ignition on you can also try putting the bike in gear , turn the ignition on and and turn the rear wheel by hand so the engine turns over (removing a spark plug from each side helps :D). You should hear the fuel pump cycle on and off as the engine rotates and the hall sensor sends a pulse.

I'd start with the spark then go from there.

I had a problem recently when it stuttered then stopped. Turned out the connector to the coil had broken inside the plastic connector.

Good call from Mr S re method of checking the Hall sensor. I've got a working spare if you want to try another.

Thanks all - some great advice there:thumb Round 1 starts on Saturday morning (not too early though:beer::jager) Will let you know how I get on:)

Fuel pump fails to prime when the wheel is rotated so I'm guessing its a knackered hall sensor :( Annoying because it was changed for a 2nd hand spare no more than 500 miles ago:mad:

Will give you a call steptoe:)
