Left a bit, down a bit....no too far..
I have been thinking about taking the beak off an R1150GS. I have seen the Metisse kit supplied by Touratech that allows the removal of the beak and the movement of the screen/instrument console nearer to the rider, but I think it is pretty ugly – the oil cooler is left sticking out in front all by itself and it all looks very unfinished. Nor I am keen on the Fallert conversion that I have seen pictures of from time to time.

However, these mods did get me wondering whether the headlight/instrument console from the R1150R could be attached to the 1150GS in place of the GS’s beak and instrument console. Anyone know if this has been tried – I’ve done a search and found nothing?

This gives rise to the following technical questions upon which I would be grateful for any input from the experts:

1. Could it be done – I’m not sure how or where the R1150R stuff attaches to the forks or whether the same attachment points exist in the GS. I’ve only got photos of the R1150R to go on at the moment;

2. Any problems with the forks? The R1150GS has the upside down forks, whereas I think the R1150R has the same forks as the R1100GS;

3. Any problems relocating the oil cooler? The R1150R has the oil cooler(s) built into the sides of the tank, but I don’t think this tank would fit a GS (or look that nice). There may be room for a smaller oil cooler in the area in front of the Telelever unit, if a bracket was fixed up properly. Does size matter?! I don’t think this would catch the forks or affect the Telelever. I think the oil hose connections may need a bit of work/bending/shortening;

4. Any difficulties with connecting up the instruments: speedo, tacho, fuel reserve etc. from the GS to the R instrument console?

I would welcome any comments - on the ability to do this, rather than the idea which is a matter of taste (or lack of it depending upon your point of view).

I have seen one photo of an R1100GS with a “normal” headlight from another make of bike attached and an oil cooler relocated as described above and I thought it looked quite good – it was an old bike, ridden hard. Taking this to its logical conclusion, I thought that the R1150R headlight/instrument console/flyscreen might look quite smart. I used a cut down screen on my R1150GS and found it to be very good – granted a bit wetter/colder in the winter – and had enough protection for motorway cruising without the buffeting!

This is just an idea at the moment, but who knows … any advice gratefully received.

Thanks in advance. :thumb
