Hey all - I’ve broken something in the l/h cylinder (while bump starting the bike).
Have a listen and see if you can diagnose the problem - I’m hoping it’s just the Cam chain tensioner, but it sounds worse than that. Doesn’t go away when the clutch lever is in. It’s a 2001 GS

It seems you oil filler cap is not properly seated. What you hear might be the "breathing" from the crankcase.

Broken cam blade or 𝙶𝚞𝚒𝚍𝚎 is it the old tensioner or the updated one

It's the 17mm tensioner - which I believe is the old one. The bike has 102k on it - so I'm guessing the Cam guides will have worn or broken.
Here is a video of the bike being turned over manually - there is a lot of play in the chain, and it sticks badly at places.
Advice very welcome please.

Definitely the CCT. Hopefully it's not the rail as well. Resist running it any more though & get the 15mm upgrade tensioner, swap it out & we will all join you in hoping for the best.

You may have seen this vid - doesn't really tell much, other than show that whilst awkward, it's a pretty straightforward job..... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KOT_eyNp9Y8

The CTT is just a spring in a bucket, if you've broken the spring, i'd agree with the diagnosis

I've never known springs to break, they just get compressed to the point it no longer apply's enough tension

I think it may be the tensioner blade :(

It’s not the cam chain tensioner. That only makes a noise on start up, and doesn’t fail as such. That noise is a broken cam chain guide. If it’s done a good on breaking you can lose the tensioner plunger as it has no guide to push on and disappears into the engine.... oh what fun

And can I add, please don’t buy a new tensioner and fit it, as suggested by others, without first checking your guide hasn’t broken. Because if it’s broken up you’ve a very good chance of losing half of the new tensioner into the engine when fitting it and causing even more damage ..

Thanks Neil!

Right, I've decided this is the end of the road for this brilliant bike, and lined up an almost identical replacement but with 80k less miles.

Next question - what do I do with the old one?

Ehm you are in London why do you not get it across to Steptoe to have a look and save yourself some wonga??

I think it has OEM auxiliary lights on it (driving lights) which I’d love to find a pair of....
Keep it! Let Steptoe take a look if you’re not feeling up to it....
