2000 (W reg) single spark cooking model R1150GS.

Looks like my gearbox has just been buggered on the motorway this morning.
So I hope to find out definitely within the next day or so but in the meantime I'm trying to find out which boxes (if any) from other models will fit???
I realise that there may be gearing differences but am not too bothered as I just use it for commuting these days.
Thanks
Millard

What was the exact problem with the gear box?.

Doing around 4,000rpm on the motorway this morning, opened the throttle to overtake and the clutch slipped. It did it again a few minutes later.
Came off the motorway slip road at my turn off for work and it wouldn't change gear. Got it down to 4th eventually but no further.
Managed to get it into work by slipping the clutch in 4th. Not quite as bad as it sounds as there's only a roundabout and one corner, so had to ride away from standstill in 4th twice.
Stopped at work and it's still stuck in 4th and a VERY hot oil/kinda smell. I did wonder if the smell might have been the clutch at first but I remember that smell from overheating my previous bike's clutch whilst negotiating some very rocky paths down in Morocco a few years back and this was a different smell altogether.
Got recovered by Green Flag and looking at getting it down to Bob Preslee now at Woolbridge Bikes for him to sort it.
I just did a wee bit of research into gearbox compaibility on the forum and came accross a couple of threads that suggested an oil leak from the engine might have been the clutch slip problem, but how would that relate to the gearbox problem? If at all?

The intermediate shaft bearing is the one that normally rumbles and fails. If you ignore it, it can spin in the case and punch through the case and dump the gearbox oil into the clutch area.... or it could be minor... :D 1150GS boxes, RT boxes R boxes can be fitted in general if you are not fussy, I think GS and RT are the same.

Not sure Steve, I'll have a good look at it over the weekend, meantime I'm holding back from the knee jerk reaction that I was having yesterday - to simply buy a 2nd hand box and have a mechanic fit it for me. I since heard a couple of possibilities, yours being one. Thanks for your reply, much appreciated.

Great stuff, just what I need if I go down that route, should know more over the weekend.
Much obliged Pekkavee

Search for gearbox codes. There's a thread with a list of all the codes with models and the gearing differences on here somewhere.
I'm gearing up to do mine, I've found a box from an R which just has a different 6th ratio. Hopefully got a mate coming round at the weekend to help.

Anyone know if I'm going to need a new clutch plate too? We believe the input splines have sheered. Mines also a 2000 1150, but only done 30k.

That's why I asked, take the gear lever linkage off and the pedal and make sure all is free pedal usually seizes on it's spindle and causes similar problems main thing is don't panic. Bolt holding the lever pivot is locktited so warm it up first.

I'm going to have a look at the linkage over the weekend, also found a thread that describes how to look for oil contaimnation on the clutch plates. That might be why the clutch slipped just beforehand, although will likely mean a strip down for a new seal - so might as well chuck a new clutch in whilst it's being attended to.

Make sure they fit a complete clutch, just fitting new plate DO'S not work for long.

I changed my gearbox recently, there is a thread on here about it with lots of info supplied by others which might give you the answer you want.

From what I understood all 1150s plus some others will fit, the one one I fitted had different gearing but is better for long distance stuff. So result.
