r1150gs Gearbox noisy.

Had my clutch replaced along with paraleaver bearings bevel gear bearings and a few other bits. There was a slight knocking noise coming from what seems to be the gearbox when it gets hot. thought it may have been the clutch hence why I had it replaced. But the noise is still there. Sounds like there is backlash in the gearbox and its just the noise being transferred, its loudest with the clutch in at idle. Is there a slightly thicker oil that I could use to try and quieten it down a bit?

Mine is the same but I used a rt g/box and a new clutch ive got use to it now let me know how you get on and how you get it quieter etc . p.s I riding a single spark bmw r1150gs .

So yours is still making the noise? People ive spoken to say don't worry about it and im not really just hope it doesn't get any worse. Have you had any advice off anyone Sheene? Some of the bearings weren't the best so everything got replaced while I was there. Going to get 75w90 oil on my way home today and do a change so hopefully the thicker oil will help with the noise.

Make sure it's GL5 spec' oil or you will kill the gearbox

well I used EP 80w90 comma GL-5 oil but gonna try straight 90 grade oil next time and I know where yo get it from and its GL-5

Not to bad use the GL-5 oil its important im happy with mine at the moment but the original box needs a total strip down etc.

How long have you owned one of these beemers? I ask because it's taken me at least 2-3yrs to get used to the noises. But I'm just back from a long trip to Italy and i was keen to get back once the fun/scenic parts were done. Fully loaded I had it working just off three figures all the way through Germany for hours on end. When I got home, moving the bike around with no helmet on it sounds just the bloody same. And I've been doing that trip on this particular bike three years on the trot.

My point is, by all means play with the oil, but I'd ignore the sounds (within reason!) and just ride it

Just another quick one. Ive seen ona few forums that people have been using 75w140?!?!?! seems a bit thick to me that but ive seen a few people say its quieter and works well. What are peoples opinion on that?

Fix a gearbox problem by using a different grade of oil...... i'll give that a try on the next gearbox problem that comes in, gotta be better than rebuilding it.

Your fixing other peoples bikes. this is my own bike and there isn't a problem because the bikes been apart when the clutch was done and he said the gearbox was fine. Like people have said its probably just something ill get used to. ive only ever owned smooth jap bikes so im new to the bmw. Im a mechanical fitter so I do have mechanical knowledge and I believe it to be backlash in the gearbox that's making the noise. Worth a try before spunking another 1000 on taking the gearbox out

There's a huge difference between the everyday harmless running noise these boxes emit and when there is a genuine internal problem.

And when you hear it you won't need to ask on the forum "if" you have a problem..
