Short version - anyone know where to source the plastic insert from a speedo drive?

Longer version for information.
My Speedo failed.
The problem was a corroded speedo cable.
But because that jammed rather than broke it jammed the speedo drive
There is a metal dog attached to the front wheel that drives a plastic insert in the speedo drive, which turns the speedo cable core.
The plastic core (above) got eaten up by the metal dog.

I'm in the process of trying to repair the insert with hard plastic glue.
But I'd rather just replace it, but I can't find the insert apart from buying a new whole speedo drive.

I havent heard yet if it is possible to just get the white gear, it certainly wasnt possible
also, check around, if you get one from another model (cant remember which) it can improve the accuracy

Japanese bikes I've had in the past have the equivalent part available, but seemingly not BMW. Last time I got one for my high miler CB500, it was about £15 IIRC. You can get a used drive from Motorworks for £22. New ones are just under fifty quid.

So just to conclude this, I could't achieve a satisfactory repair of the plastic inner, so a replacement was the only option. Motorworks must get through a lot of the second hand ones because 'they are never in stock'. And you can't buy the plastic drive by itself, so as moonhead rightly says, you have to replace the whole thing. Part number WHA06287

I went with a gps speedo, I'm happy with it, it has a few other display options like trip meter, time, elevation etc. there can be dead sports when it will flicker when losing contact with the gps but they are few enough it doesn't bother me. I ordered mine through speedhut and will go back to them to get a speedo for my old truck as well. http://www.speedhut.com/about-speedometers.html

What happens in tunnels? Presumably it stops?

I like the idea, but that's bit of show stopper for me

yeah, mine failed years ago, researched and got a replacement from an RT?
improves accuracy - but less margin so more likely to get pinged by the cops......

I haven't heard of just the plastic being availble separatly either.
