Hey All.

This week I took ownership of a set of Zega panniers and top box for my R1150GS Adventure. Paid an arm and a leg for them and was chuffed until today when I went down to fit them onto the bike and it looks like my remus exhaust is in the way. Its set very high and touching the pillion rear footrest.

The panniers I bought are the 35ltr left 42ltr right so I could avoid having an issue with cutouts for the exhaust, but never thought about the mounting brackets.

I have two questions;
1. Does the support bracket go behind the pillion rear left footrest? I can't see how it would go on the front, but if that is the case, no hope with my remus in the way. Its right up against the footrest post. Is the only option to move the exhaust and if so, how do you go about that? Big job?

2. The pannier bars are corroded and slightly rusting. What would you recommend to treat them - thats cheap. Sand and paint (with what - form where?).

Anyone got a R1150GSA with remus and Zegas? Some photos would be helpful, plus any advice you could give on mounting.

Thanks all, in advance. I'd be lost without this forum.....:thumb

PS I know I know.....the bike needs a clean.........

For touring get rid of the Remus put the cat back on and get a stubby..... Nice and cheap ...!

I have a similar situation with mink it was thy Remus but not as bad as yours. I think it is the way I put the Y piece and Remus on. I would suggest undoing ALL bolts on the exhaust system and aligning it all up again.
I will get round to do this one day :augie

Loosen off the y-piece, and end can, and adjust so it doesn't interfere with the pannier frame.
after you loosened every thing off it still might contact the silencer,if you look at the remus exhausts that have come off 1150s nearly all show signs of contact with that bolt.

Don't be afraid to bend it all about a bit.......as above, if you loosen all the bolts and clamps up, you can get quite a lot of 'wiggle room' created.......you can even add in a made-up bracket of some sorts to lower or move things about a bit more....EBay will supply you with odds and ends and exhaust hangers, bobbins and basically anything you need to frig the system about to fit:thumb2

It doesn't all have to line up perfectly, as long as the critical junctions seal ok and the heat isn't being passed drekkly through the thin ally box skin, and as long as it's all tight and secure, you can muck it all about as much as you like :thumb2

PS I know my setup isn't for Zegas, but I've no doubt with a bit of creative thinking and a few cheap parts from ebay or any local 'zorst supplier/fitter, you'll be able to get it sorted :thumb2

option 2

I have a titanium shortened remus, first "shorty", cut down and rebuilt, looks like factory job, pics on here somewhere, would slip straight on and provide clearance you need, deal to do if interested as looking for a pair of shotgun pipes to adapt to the 1150 GSA,
PM me email if want pics etc

Clout the remus with a small ball pane hammer where the mount touches. Results in a nice sculptered hollow.

On my set i had on an 1150 adv the rail was between the footpeg and subframe and packed out with washers/spacers this was as specified in the instructions and came with the pannier set. They were the special set with the exhaust cut out so may be different but this would give the clearance you need. I repainted my frames with PJ1 enamel stuff and they lasted well with only a small amount of rust where the panniers rubbed where they mounted on the frame. Looking at the pics im surprised you are concerned with cosmetics though:augie:thumb

Heres an excerpt from the fitting instructions for the left hand rails

2. Mounting of the left hand rack part:
- remove the bolts of foot rest system and replace these by two hexagon socket bolts M8x20 (R1100GS)
or M8x25 (R1150GS).
- Place three washers underneath the front bolt.
- Fasten the rack part with teh rear bolt between the foot rests and the frame extension arm.
- There are two threads at the frame tail. Fsten here the rack part by means of each one hexagon socket
bolt M8x16 and M6x20 and the corresponding washer.

Hope it helps old chap:beerjug:

Cheers all.

I'll give it another go next weekend. A mixture of loosening the y piece and trying to make some space, then hitting it a thump with a rubber hammer and mounting as above should sort me out.

Will washt the bike too if its lucky!:thumb
