I want to use my GS to so some green laning this year and I was wondering what I could remove to make the bike a bit more manageable. I'll take off the rear seat, rack, splashguard thingy, maybe the mirrors...would it be worth removing the centrestand?

No. little point, and it's already low on the bike helping with the C.O.G.......in fact, if you fit a plate to it, the centrestand can form a useful part of the armour underneath for deep ruts and big rocks, and also helps prevent a 10KG ball of clay and mud formming up there if you haven't got a CAT on the bike

Don't take your mirrors off either.......you might as well have a really good crap before you go out for the amount of difference it will make.

DO loosen them a tad though, and take the allan key (5mm? 6mm? can't remember offhand) along with you as well.

The biggest thing you can do to keep weight down is to only half fill the tank.....there are few places in the UK where you are more than ten miles from a fuel pump on a green lane.

the fully loaded GSA in front on its side with its pilot waiting for a passing rugger team or chinook to pick it up

leave the rack on,otherwise you will have no grab holds WHEN you get it stuck:thumb:D
apart from decent tyres you need to change nothing, after all this kind of use is what it was built for.
they bounce/crash quite well!!

Indicators sometimes break.

On the BMW ORS bikes they take off the indicators and mirrors.

So basically leave everything on then. The ORS bikes have a few bits removed but I guess that's to prevent any more damage than is necessary.

What are a good off road tyre that are also OK on the road? I have Anakee 3's on there at the moment which aren't particularly knobbly.

Indicators, mirrors and screens do get broken, but you are unlucky if it happens to you because its not often that they touch the ground. As mentioned above, use as lithe fuel as possible.

TKC's or heidenau K60's are the favourites. Both will give you fairly decent traction in all but the most muddy of tracks.

They joy of the GS is being able to hoon along a road then just carry on when the tarmac ends, so apart from tyres don't change a thing (i don't like panniers on cos i get the horrible feeling my leg will get caught under them when I inevitably dump it)

Karoo 3's are pretty good on road and lots better than e.g. Tourances on gravel and a bit of dirt/mud. Downside is the back one wears out a bit quicker. (Based on my experience on an 1150)

I damaged the screen on mine when I stopped went to put my (left) foot down and found the greunds dropping away too far to reach the floor. The screen hit a tree and bent the screen frames (both of them).

Lessons learned -
- dont break old habits - I normally use my right foot
- be more careful where I stop
- take screen off when going off road
- Dont even think about going off road (I'd be crap at it anyway)

Completely agree with Bill about the fuel - you can save yer self 10 or 15 kilos there alone ....

Definitely take off the rear splash guard - if you're on say, TKC's and work the suspension quite hard it'll easily get caught in the tread of the tyre ..
