Both my power sockets don't work. They haven't worked for years, but I'm looking to fix them now in preparation for a big trip.

1st socket on the top left side had what appears to be some sort of copper corrision on one plug - see pic. I used WD40 to clean most of it out. I read elswhere that a bit of vinegar should clear this away, any suggestions on how to prevent this from re-occuring? I haven't tested it yet, as I don't have the means.
Considering this as it looks useful, not just for the test: http://www.nippynormans.com/LED-EMERGENCY-LIGHT-with-DIN-plug-fitted/productinfo/BAS-BA40/

The 2nd socket near the starter motor is in worse shape. I noticed that the red wire was supposed to be part of a connector, similar to the brown wire circled and arrowed in the pic.

Am I ok to simply splice the two red wires together, or do they absolutely need to be combined inside the connector? The reason I ask is there as absolutely no slack on the connector which makes it very tricky.

Any help is highly appreciated!

From the 2nd pic it looks like the red wire has been cut, if this is correct I would solder the wire back together and use heat shrink to insulate it, as for stopping the connectors going green again, just give them a dab of grease after you've cleaned them up.

Thanks for the tip on the grease.

The red wire wasn't cut, the pair came out of the connector. They should be in the same position as the brown wires, i.e. paired into that socket. Just need to know if that connector is only there to hold the wires for the power socket only, or if there is another feed coming in / going out that I need to be aware of and maintain that connection.

Before you do any soldering, disconnect the battery + terminal.
Immersing in vinegar overnight is a good way to get rid of rust and is pretty kind to the metal and use Vaseline on any electrical contacts to keep moisture and corrosion away.

Hi Guys,
I have the same problem, except that the connectors have corroded away and the wires have broken free.
I can fix it if I had new connectors, but I can't find them anywhere. Even my local dealer does not have them.

Do you guys and gals know where I can procure them from?

Cheers,

Clint

Look on Ebay under 'waterproof electrical connectors'

Thanks for that. I tried different search criteria in eBay but not waterproof electrical connectors. :(

Thanks for the help.

Just get some of these and use standard female spade connectors sealed with vaseline and a wee lick of waxoyl around the alloy doofer and yer sorted right cheap!
