I know it's not a GS but should imagine the systems are similar so can anybody shed any help or knoledge. My my mates R1150R 2001 with servo'd ABS has an intermittent fault with the rear abs light coming on and then the loss of all brakes. Stop the bike turn the ignition key off and reset it and will start up normally and clear and the fault and the brakes will work. Two weeks ago it went back to Oceam BMW in Plymouth who said there was air in the system and then proceeded to bleed the system that cost £165. He was out o it last week end same problem occurs, again bike taken back to Ocean BMW at plymouth who look at and tells him ABS pump has a high resistance and said no charge for this. They did then say a new pump is £1000 but for customer loyalty they will only charge £900 :confused:for the pump and then another £300 for them to fit it. It has a new battery fitted to it, so that should eliminate that query.

So any advice or help ??

Does the bike have a FULL service history?

IS there a record of brake fluid changes?

If So tell yer mate to get on the phone with BMW customers services and Gurn his lamps out at them

Mention Papers and possibility of getting killed on one of thier vehicles etc etc etc

All above to be done in a POLITE but Firm manner

Good Luck

EDIT just read post again 2001 can't be a servo bike! Must Be ABS II check the air gaps and the ABS rings for dirt rust and damage, all advice above re BMW is null and void

Pull the relay and the bulbs from ABS if not fixable and it will be safe as a concrete bunker in a hurricane!
Unlike the Servo ABS systems from 2003 until 2005 I thnk

My first though would be to claim the money back related to the first service: clearly there was no air trapped there and your friend was charged due to a erronous diagnostic.

The ABS modulator (it includes the pump) is indeed an expensive toy. But it could also be due to the speed sensors. If the dealer says (that you may trust or not) the pump has the problem, maybe they tested it and the sensors are within the tolerance spec (if my memory serves me well, around 900 ohm).

If I were your friend, I would take on a multimeter and check the resistance from the sensors, and check the air gap too.

If these are ok, then the modulator is the culprit and he will be looking at that £1200 bill.

Take all the ABS gubbins off and buy the non-ABS parts to convert it, should cost max £50. not a difficult job, I did the same to my last GS, the brakes were great afterwards (though non-ABS):)

The bike does have a full service history, don't know if he will attempt to claim money back for the first service, but his optimate went red over the weekend so maybe it's a battery fault. How you mot an abs model bike without abs, as they have to the dashlights run the test and then see them go out to say no faults with the system??
