R12 G/S Enduro

Bit the bullet and booked a test ride for tomorrow. Just sitting on it in the dealership today I'm impressed by the ergonomics which are always a big issue for me with being 6'4". Only trouble is I dont have room for another bike in the garage so something else will have to go to make room for this (if I like it).....

There’s ALWAYS room in the garage for another bike LOL

Mr Hatter, you can always keep it at my house if you like? :augie

Hi did your Rally cockpit fairing arrive. Has it made a difference ?

It’s still not arrived from BMW , they seem to push the delivery date out by a week every week . Latest ETA is end of next week . Unit Garage have also just mailed to say my rear rack and pannier rails which were due last week are delayed to at least mid August which means I’ll have no luggage carrying capacity on the R12 for my upcoming trip so will likely have to take another bike :-(

That’s really frustrating

Well I'm just back from taking this out from a spin and I'm sad to say its not for me. There are a lot of things I thought were great about it such as the ergonomics, the suspension, the brakes, the mirrors, the smoothness of the engine management and the excellent quickshifter, but there were two things that I really didn't like...firstly I was getting very little feedback from the front end when properly hooning it on twisty stuff. I was surprised by this because there was even less feedback than from a GS with a funny front end. It wasn't at all confidence inspiring and I had no idea where the limit was on the tyres. Second thing was the engine which although it has enough poke I found it to be too mellow in character compared to the rest of the bike (regardless of which mode it was in) and it brought back memories of my last R1200GS which was similar. I'm honestly disappointed because I was expecting to love it and have to find ways of fitting another bike in the garage. I'd ridden to the BMW dealer on my 2023 Africa Twin and when I got back on it I felt like 'ah, this is more like it' a much more characterful and responsive engine and infinitely better feedback from the tyres. An imteresting experience to take one out for a spin but sadly not for me🤔

You test rode the wrong one if that’s the picture of the one you rode , that’s the standard bike not the enduro with the 21” and 18” wheels ;-)

At the end of the day it’s a personal thing , I really like the engine and hated the AT , thankfully we are all different or what a boring life it would be

Sat on one today .
Was very underwhelmed , though black doesn’t do it any favours .
Seat felt quite low and it felt more cramped than I was expecting

Is that a low seat ?

Arsey that is a standard bike not the Enduro which is taller and roomier . Mine is due in the next month hopefully and I really can’t wait . Have a sit on an enduro version if you can but they are few and far between at the moment.

Those are thoughtful modifications. I recently purchased mine a couple weeks ago, and the sparkling has begun. I’m very interested in that fairing along with the NAV bracket. Have you a link for that NAV bracket?
Engine bars are on the way from Germany. I have installed the OEM side bag brackets and much to my relief The side bags from the urban fit perfectly. One modification only which was switching the position of the top bobbins so the locking mechanism works. Those valve cover guards were not even on the radar but I like them. Good luck on your upcoming ride and keep posting pictures. Thank you.

Oh yeah, and I have a throwback from my 14 R9T. The matching soft tail bag. It fits pretty good on the bench seat, but I’m gonna cut out some spacers using those interlock clothes cell foam floor mats just for a couple centimeters to keep it off the plastics.

Received my Wunderlich crash bars and the Unit Garage rear rack . Still waiting on a date for the pannier rails

Away with work this week so will be the weekend before I get a chance to fit them

Did manage a 100 mile ride out yesterday and every time I ride the R12 I like it more and more . The Akrapovic seems to give it a bit more of a punch above 4000 RPM

I’ve just finished beta testing the HEX Mojave ezCAN and was given permission to announce the compatibility with the R12 platform.
It’s a tight fit, but it will work. Eventually, I will lengthen the power leads to the battery to allow more wiggle room under the seat. This will allow better power management for accessories.
I will post pictures when I get everything tidied up over the weekend.

Also fitted the OEM engine bars a couple days ago and waiting on the auxiliary lights to arrive Monday.

I have just finished fitting the Unit Garage Rear Rack & Luggage Plate

The rack is very good quality and the paint finish good

However the fit of the rack is slightly out and I had to open of the holes to get the rack to fit , not a big issue but enough for me to let Unit Garage know

The black rack plate has a very sharp burr all around its outer edge which cannot be removed without removing the black anodised finish

The sharp edge is sharp enough to cut into a soft luggage bag so makes the plate unusable as is so i have asked that it gets replaced with a new one that has been properly de-burred before anodising

As a suggestion I have also fed back that it would be nice if the bolts supplied were Torx head instead of hex head to match the BMW ones (I have swapped them all out for Torx)

Well , Unit Garages customer service is less than helpful and I’ll certainly not be buying from them again

Here is their reply to the issue of the sharp edges on the rack plate :

What can I tell you? From the photos I see everything seems ok to me...
Without having the bike here and without photos that clearly show the problems, I have no way to answer.
We have 15,000 product combinations, and sometimes there can be problems, but as has happened in the past, we are always available to help.
We CANNOT replace or provide warranty for products without clear photos that clearly show the problems, so you must ALWAYS help me understand exactly what the problems are.
The word of the end customer is often unreliable, these are people who do something else in their life, and I think this is understandable."
