Engine Bars

I have a set of SW Motech lower Engine bars. The left side developed a blister behind which was rust.

They are less than a year old and have seen very little water.

I only learnt later that SW Motech bars will not allow the fitment of Remus Headers.

I bought H&B bars and they were very good quality but when I fitted them to the bike, one side stuck out about 1" more than the other. It appears that they are all like that?? I returned them and bought SW Motech ones, which have been redesigned and don't have the bar below the sump guard and look very neat.

H&B Bars

Does any one know if the H&B bars fit with the OEM cylinder head protectors in place?

If you refer to the black plastic OEM protecters then yes they fit - left mine on when I fitted the H&B bars a couple of years ago. Have upper & lower bars and have been very pleased with them

got sw motech upper and lowers on mine with motoworks plastic cylinder head covers, works for me looks ace to, havent tested them kin anger yet though!

Had the SW Motech ones first, but didn't like the bar running under the bash plate (now ammended, I believe).

Have the TT ones now, well pleased. Yes, a bit pricey but quality wise, excellant. :thumb2

Oh, and don't pay someone else to fit them, anyone with even limited mechanical skills can do this easily enough.

Have you considered the crash bars from Holan:

They're a pretty good price, leave plenty of room for servicing and can have uppers fitted... and yes, I am affiliated with them :augie I'm the UK distributor...

More info on the racks here: http://holan.pl/en/product/1/9/39/226/223/Crash_bars_BMW_R_1200_GS

fitting og GS12 08?

Just got the H&D bars - engine & tank.
Being not mechanically minded, what is the cable looking thing that is connected to the exhaust in the way of where the engine bars goes? How to I disconnect that safely to place the bars?
Once in place, is there a max torque for tightening bolts?
Any other hints re fitting, especially for the tank protection bars? Thanks - Hugo

hey Hugo thats the exhaust sensor - i also thought the same when i went to fit my HB bars but you DO NOT need to touch the sensor. The mounting points go behind the sensor and mount perfectly. The small allen key grub screws on the central bar also face rearwards after final installation BTW!

the destructions you have with the bars give you the torque values i seem to remember.

when installing the bolts check each bolt is in good condition as i had one with a damaged thread!

Does H+B bars fit with the remus exhaust?
I want to buy a set but don't want the hassle of sending them back if they don't go on....:blast

fitting H&B bars

Thanks Rob for your help. I have just fitted the bars without touching the temp sensors. Also great thread.

The H&B bars went on fine. However, as per the pic, the side bar is not fully into the front cross bar (off by about 10mm). I have checked I have used the right spacer on the correct side (40mm on LH, 30 mm on RH, etc), the bars protrude a similar amount on either side to protect the engine, etc so all that looks fine. Has anyone experienced the same? Any clues? Mine is an '08 but Motobins tell me the engine bars are the same, only the tank bars differ for this new model. Cheers
