R1200 gs non-starter. Help!

My first post is a bit sooner than I would have liked…. Apologies if already covered (I couldn’t find anything) but my 2006 20,000 mile GS won’t start. Great shame and threat to my marriage as I only got it on Sunday. .. Was OK for 200 miles of assorted trips, but now, nothing.
Battery is full and preflight check is fine, but now no response from starter button - not even a click from solenoid or any drain on battery. Have I missed something stupid or is it the switch, and can this be by-passed to prove/or elimate this as the culprit. Many thanks

Welcome to the madhouse

Checcks to do

1) kill switch is it in the off position ?

2) In Gear - for ease & a check make sure its in neutral

3) Sidestand make sure the sidestand isnt down

4) EWS displayed in the combi

Any of the above will stop the bike from starting

If EWS is in the display come back and we can give you more info

where about in WS are you ??

Sorry to hear you are having trouble mate...
I don't have a 1200 but someone may as well start you off with eliminating the silly ones...
1) Kill switch, check click on-off a couple of times. Try starting again.
2) Gear / sidestand / Clutch. Check.
3) Do you have 'EWS' on the dash/LCD, by any chance?
4) Get yourself a cheap multimeter. One with continuity test. You'll need to start from the switch and work your way to the starter from there. Or the other way...

good luck!

DoH! Beat me to it as I was typing! :) Must be something in it, then... same suggestions. :beerjug:

Thanks for the quick response both. Kill switch, sidestand and neutral all as they should be. EWS on dash - not sure. I'll check tomorrow. I'll also dig out my multimeter.
And where in west sussex - Pulborough.

If it is EWS check some recent threads for 1. loom break near ignition and 2. faulty ring antenna. Both cases you may get intermittent starting, and with wiring fault you may get success if you move bars around while trying to start

2006 bike. Check the starter relay under the tool tray. Bridge the live terminals

Video of dash cycling and you can just hear me pressing the start button afterwards...
Does this help? .Am pretty sure its not to do with bad connections in the circuitry beyond the switch.

I'll say it again. Check the starter relay.
It's in the cubbyhole under the tool tray.

Here’s the relay - with the ignition off bridge number 30 and 87, as in the picture. The starter should turn the engine over even with the ignition off. Obviously have the gearbox in neutral :D

I can't remember seeing EWS on my '05 bike when I was starting it, wonder if that is a clue? My '10 bike does not show EWS when starting.

DWA means the bike alarm batteries are knacked, hidden under the rear seat cowling they are. Takes time to dismantle the cover but easy to do. Anyhow, DWA won't stop the bike, afaik.

Brake Failure alarm is puzzling too...

Am I missing something or is your dash not showing a neutral light so will not start. Lifting the side stand and putting the clutch should bypass the no neutral assuming this switches are working properly.

Worth starting with Steptoe's suggestion as he's a professional. Make sure to use decent gauge wire as per pic. Am sure if you post results you'll get useful feedback

Many thanks to all. I can't do anything tonight but will start with Steptoe's suggestion and will feedback.

I'm not familiar with the start sequence on the R1200 but that EWS does seem a bit odd. Also that the Neutral light is not on is a bit strange. You got some good test suggestions already. I would add another easy one, try turning the bars full lock left <try starting> then full lock righ <try starting>... also keep an eye on the dash to see if any artefacts appear while you move the bars. [the idea being to check if there are any issues with the wiring loom around the headstock.]

Good luck and keep us posted...

That startup sequence is nothing like my 06 GS

It would be interesting to run his vin through reprom and see what year / options are specced fitted.

Prolly a high level ZFE / onboard comp

Looks like it may not be in neutral, as many of you have pointed out, or it may be the gear pot thing may not be showing the correct gear position

on the kombi, and the clutch or sidestand microswitch is duff.

Or even the starter has farked out

Just thought, you dont even hear the fuel pump prime? would that failing to prime, tell the ZFE not to initiate start?

A session on a GS911 may prove rewarding also
