Just had my 30,000mile GSA serviced at Park Lane BMW where I bought it from, got to pay about £350, a lot I know but thats their price so be it, then the service guy says you need a new disc as its badly worn and warped, I know this as I told them!
But I have to say £380 supplied and fitted was a shock!!! FFS he had the cheek to say they had it in stock and would I also like new bolts! I politely told him not a chance I'd source my own one.

Quick call to EBC after a scout on the net and £66.91 later I have a new disc on route, delivery in a week.

How the hell did it go from £380 to £66.91.... answers on a postcode please! hahaha:beerjug:

Answer:

1) You got a quote from a dealer (business) with high overheads.

2) Your subsequent quote was from a retailer with low overheads, coupled with free installation (you).

the first also applies VAT on the entire bill (parts and labour) - the second, only on the part.

If you feel that Park Lane are making inordinately-high profits - then you need to try running a similar business.

You are correct though - to many people........ option 2 is the only one which they themselves - can justify/afford.

Just remeber to fit new bolts that hold the disc on the wheel as they are only useable once. They are not a lot of money, think I paid 6 or 7 quid a bolt when I changed my disc for an EBC one.

I agree...

Yep should have mentioned the overall cost of BMW having luxury place to take my bike for a service, completely with you on that one, I just find it hard to find a reason that it should be sooo much more for the part let alone fitting it? The disc from BMW £185, EBC £66. I can understand the rest as you say overheads wages etc, but more than double the price?

Thanks for the bolt hint I'll make sure I pick some up cheers.

you need to make sure you use a heat gun and completly heat the disc bolts to remove them, new bolts from bm are nowhere near 6 or 7 quid each i see to think 1.80 each ish.

I have just replaced the rear disk on my 2006 GS last weekend, EBC rear disk from Demon Tweeks £63 postage free, Caliper repair kit £16, EBC organic pads £13 and five new bolts at 97p each plus £2.75 postage for everything all from Motorworks.

just my thoughts, the OE brembo disc is of a far higher quality than an ebc equivelent.end of argument.
if that ebc replacement is still fitted to the bike in 30k i will eat your back tyre.
if it looks like shit and is corroded and rusty you will then realise why there is a difference in price.
oh,nearly forgot,
i hope you follow all of the above advice, and all of the bolts come out..................
the dealers have huuuuge overheads ,no one ever complains when they get a £14k loaner for the day
you have a choice.
take your pick of the independant repairers.
steptoes online shop can supply decent quality discs.

I think what a lot of people bulk at is why motorad costs are so much worse than car prices. The number of bikes produced is now relatively high across a range. Mini Car 6k service £99 Bike service in region of £200

Not a lot of money!! Bolts like those cost pennies to make. Literally pennies.

In part its a volume thing - new car registrations in numbers are 30 times bigger than bike registrations, and the bike figures include a lot of scooters and 125s. But it doesnt help that BMW have forced their dealerships away from bike dealers to the multi franchise car outfits. In Bristol, for example, we lost an excellent dealer in Bath Road motorcycles and ended up with Dick Lovett who had to build a fancy car type showroom to BMW's specification. To be fair they are at least staffed by bikers. But this move is forcing dealers to have over expensive facilities for the volume of business they do.

The answer is to wave two fingers at BMW and use an indie. Sooner or later the message will get through but whilst ever posters say " GSA serviced at Park Lane BMW where I bought it from, got to pay about £350, a lot I know but thats their price so be it" all that will happen is that prices will be edged up further. Squeaking pips and all that.

My last bike had stainless bolts holding the discs to the wheels. 20K miles and two winters later, they all came out fine when the wheels were powder coated.

I did look at an indie for my 48k service and to be honest they weren't, a lot cheaper well not enough to use them.
