R1200GS Adventure headers and standard silencer

Hello,

I am currently looking to spend 6 months riding around central asia and india in 2009. One of the risks is the limited availability of unleaded fuel in some areas. Because of this risk I have been looking at removing my catalytic converter by replacing the standard headers I have with a set of remus ones. This has raised a few questions for me
1. Is it possible to have a set of remus headers with the standard silencer?
2. I have heard reports that If I change the silencer and the header that the adventure paniers may not fit properly or may get a little "too warm"? Is this true or is this a problem with only lesser known brands of exhaust/header combinations?

Any advice would be really appreciated.

The OE can should fit fine with a set of Remus headers. If you think about it, the Remus can fits the OE headers fine and is designed to fit on the Remus headers. Ergo.....

I've got a full Remus system on my GS and use the Vario panniers. I've never had any problems with them getting too hot.

I ran my Adventure for a while with Remus headers and the stock can, it all fits perfectly with no problems
I now have a BOS can fitted and again that fits perfectly
with either set up the panniers still fit perfectly and I've had no problems with anything getting warm.
obviously if you fit some kind of stumpy end can it may well heat things up a bit more but that should be obvious..

You`ll have no problems with fitment or heat and you`ll be pleased with the slight difference in mid range power.

If you were worried about the heat in the pannier, you can easily fit a heat blanket. As a precaution, I use some stuff called 600mph tape on the outside of my Verns panniers on my 1100 because the can is so close to the pannier.

No issues on the 1200 though

My friend and I both bought 2008 GS Adventures a few months apart. He has every concievable accessory, including a complete replacement exhaust system. On a return trip from Cornwall, on a motorway, both of us two up - same fuel load - and full luggage -we did a top gear roll on from about 50mph to almost 120mph (clock speeds). There was absolutely nothing in it - me half a bikes length in front (my bike also has loads of accessories - but no exhaust changes).

I felt the weight of the exhaust system he took off and the new system he fitted and couldnt believe the weight difference. I planned to make the swop when I could afford it - but now think - is it worth it? My wife and I weigh about 4 stone more than him and his, so weight was not a factor. Makes you wonder don't it?

He bought a fuel commander gadget at the bike show yesterday. We will try again once he has fitted and set it up correctly and will post what happens.

less restriction = less heat!

I've noticed on several of my bikes in the past that changing to a less restrictive exhaust means that the silencer runs alot less hot, which makes sense in my mind.

the performance issue is always open to debate, but when it's cold outside, i sometimes miss the chance to quickly heat up my hands on the exhaust (when stopped..)
