Whilst washing my month old GS this morning, I noticed my headlight has developed a crack in the joint between the two lenses about 2 inches in length. The funny thing is that there is no chip or dent as you would expect if a stone had struck it. I am wondering how this might have been caused. Perhaps a manufacturing fault? Is there any point in asking the dealer to consider a warranty claim?

Thanks in advance.

No harm in asking as it's only a month old.

Does your dealer value your custom?

I had a similar problem with my winglets, they developed stress cracks where they the screws go through. Raised it with dealer at service and they replaced them under warranty no problem. I would defo try the dealer as new lens will cost £££££.

Get it sorted then pay £40? for a perspex headlamp protector.

The dealer in Bristol has been very helful on the phone, so far. Agreed that I shall drop in tomorrow and show them the problem. They think BMW can probably assist. We shall see.

You can't replace the lens and a headlamp assembly is around £260.00 !!

I use a Ventura headlamp protector very good and less than 10% of the cost of a broken lens at £23.77. I had one on my old 1200 (after replacing the headlamp) and my current 1200, about 80,000 miles use between the two of them without issues.

Don't remind me of the 1200 headlight unit...

I had an '07 GSA (bought it second hand), the bulb went and so I opened it up to replace the bulb, only to find the plastic (you read that right) retaining unit and retaining wire for the bulb had broke in half.

I went back to the BMW dealer I got the bike from and they said they had to replace it. When I said, "oh ok, at least its just a small part" they replied "err, no, we have to replace the ENTIRE lamp unit".....

The cost of said item? £240.00.

£240 quid just because a small retaining unit for the bulb had broke?!!? Madness.

Thankfully, I hadn't had the bike long so got it fixed under warranty, but there you have it.....

Result. Dealer says the headlight can be repalced under warranty, as approved by BMW.:thumb2

The fancy new plastic headlight lenses on the latest Speed and Street Triples are cracking on a regular basis according to those who own them :augie

All done, thanks to great service from BMW's warranty dept and also Dick Lovett in Bristol. Headlight replaced by DL within 30 minutes on Saturday, foc.
